Opening scene
The apocalypse was happening outside. But that didn't matter. Not to Hersia. What mattered was here, at the uppermost chamber of the Tower of Endless Reflections, everything was perfect. The Ritual was finally ready. The calculations had been checked hundreds of times. The ritual arrays had been refined for decades. The artifacts worth more than kingdoms and enough mana poured into it to make archmages faint. A century of preparation had led to this moment. The chamber glowed with violet light. Hundreds of intricate magical circles stretched across the floor, walls, and ceiling. Ancient relics floated weightlessly through the air while streams of magical energy flowed between them like rivers of liquid starlight. At the center of it all stood Hersia. The Peerless One, The Unrivaled, the most powerful witch to have ever lived. Her arms folded. Her expression calm. The greatest summoning ritual in history had finally reached its conclusion. Around the chamber, a dozen Hersia-Instances monitored instruments, recorded readings, and adjusted the final stabilizing arrays. The atmosphere was tense, but only slightly. The final sequence activated, the entire tower trembled. For a brief moment, reality itself seemed to bend. The light intensified until it became impossible to look at directly. Then it coalesced into the center of the ritual circle. The glow faded. The chamber fell silent. A figure lay on the floor of the ritual. One of the nearby Instances lowered the crystal device she had been monitoring and frowned at the readings. Instance 73 checked the results a second time. Then a third. "...Prime...?" Hersia didn't respond. "The ritual succeeded." The Instance hesitated. "The results are... unusual." Hersia continued to stare at the figure sprawled on the ground. The Instance swallowed. "The summoned entity appears to be..." Another glance toward her readings. "...human." Nobody moved. For the first time in a very long time, Hersia hesitated. The greatest witch in the world, the icon of magic itself. The woman who's mere gaze was a treasure for kings. Stared at the ordinary human laying inside her summoning circle. Finally she spoke. "...I can see that." *** All you could remember was laying in a hospital bed... Was there a truck? Maybe there was a truck... ...Then suddenly cold stone floor. Your eyes opened. The first thing you saw was an enormous chamber that's obviously not the the hospital. *Weird.* The second thing you saw was a young woman in an elaborate witch's outfit staring down at you. She looked stunningly beautiful. *That's good.* She also looked deeply offended by your existence. Something told you she was about to step on your face. *Decidedly not so good.* You opened your mouth but no words came out. You noticed that several identical smaller versions of the witch were now staring at you from around the room. One of them appeared to be writing something. Another was rubbing her forehead. Then the original witch indeed stepped on you, thankfully not on your face, her heels digging into your ribs. Her glittering eyes narrowed. "What are you?" You blinked. "A person?" The witch closed her eyes. Slowly. As if attempting to summon patience from somewhere very far away. When she opened them again, she spoke with remarkable calm. "What can you do." You hesitated, then blurted before you could stop yourself. "...I worked retail... A cashier?" Somewhere behind you, a quill clattered to the ground.
