Opening scene

The last thing you remembered was the blinding white flash of the portal, the cheers of a grateful kingdom fading behind you, and the sensation of being pulled apart atom by atom. Then, softness. Your eyes snapped open. The ceiling above you wasn't carved stone or silken canopy. It was plain, white, and had a small, familiar water stain in the corner shaped vaguely like a screaming potato. You were lying on your back, not in armor or adventurer's leathers, but in the thin, worn t-shirt and boxers you’d fallen asleep in what felt like a lifetime ago. Your mattress. Your lumpy, familiar, wonderfully mundane mattress. You shot up, a gasp catching in your throat. It worked. You were home. The musty, comfortable scent of your own apartment, a symphony of dusty laundry and stale air, filled your lungs. The muted gray light of an overcast morning filtered through your blinds. You ran a hand through your hair, feeling the familiar texture, no longer matted with the grime of a dungeon crawl. A manic grin spread across your face. You did it. It was over. Your feet hit the cool laminate of your bedroom floor. You felt a strange lightness, a sense of anticlimax warring with overwhelming relief. It was quiet. Too quiet. A quick glance at the digital clock on your nightstand showed only garbled, flashing red lines: `12:00... 12:00... 12:00...` Power must have cycled. Shrugging it off, you stumbled out of your bedroom, your mind already racing towards the simple joys of a hot shower and microwavable breakfast burrito. That's when you saw them. And smelled them. Your brain stalled, unable to reconcile the sight. The perfumes were the herald, but the reality was a silent, crowded tableau of impossibility. There, crammed between your worn-out sofa and the cheap IKEA coffee table, was your entire adventuring party, looking utterly, profoundly lost. Suhana Valthorne stood rigid by the window, her hand resting on the hilt of her katana, crimson eyes narrowed as she scanned the silent, rainy street below. Her dark skin and stark white hair were a jarring monochrome splash against the peeling paint of the wall. She was coiled like a spring, a lethal predator dropped into a hamster cage. Princess Violet was perched uncomfortably on the arm of your sofa, her provocative mage’s robes looking absurdly out of place. She tugged at the hem of her skirt, her usual teasing smirk replaced by a thin, tight line of anxiety. She kept glancing at the dead, black screen of your forty-inch TV as if expecting it to bite. And then there was Brittania. The haughty elven healer was standing in the middle of the room with her arms crossed, a look of supreme offense on her elegant features. Her silver hair seemed to shimmer even in the dim light, but her emerald eyes were stormy. She looked like she’d just been forced to walk through a sewer. You had a feeling she was about one second away from delivering a scathing lecture on the abysmal state of your mortal dwelling. Tucked away in the corner, almost completely hidden by the shadow of your overflowing laundry basket, was Michelene Emberclaw. The dragonkin knight had made herself as small as possible, her heavy silver-and-gold armor looking like a cage she was trapped within. Her curly auburn hair framed a face flushed with anxiety, and her amber eyes darted around the room, too shy to meet anyone's gaze. One gauntleted hand nervously fiddled with a strap on her armor, the faint scrape of metal on metal the only sound she made. They were all here. In your apartment. The silence was thick with confusion, anxiety, and too many clashing perfumes. It was Brittania who broke it, her voice sharp and laced with accusation as her eyes finally snapped to you. "Explain this. Now. What is this... *place*? This squalor? This is your...'home'?" Her nose wrinkled in disgust. Before anyone else could speak, a low, guttural moan echoed up from the street below. It wasn't human. It was long, drawn-out, and full of a terrible, mindless hunger. It was followed by another, and then another, a chorus of decay rising from the concrete canyon of your city. Suhana, still at the window, went even more rigid. "Outside," she said, her voice a low, dangerous whisper. "There is... something wrong outside."
