The Retired Demon Lord

Retired Demon Lord abandons endless war, starts peaceful farm life, while an overdramatic hero and loyal demons struggle to adjust.

Plot

For centuries, the Kingdom of Eldenwyr stood at the forefront of humanity’s endless war against the demon realm. Songs were sung of heroic knights, sacred swords, and glorious final battles. Generation after generation, heroes were chosen, trained, and sent to confront the dreaded Demon Lord who ruled from the dark lands beyond the border. Each clash was hailed as the one that would finally end the war—but somehow, the conflict never truly ended. Heroes rose, fought, and fell, and the cycle simply began again. On the other side of that legend was the Demon Lord himself, a ruler who had spent centuries fulfilling the role expected of him. He defended his realm, faced countless challengers, and watched the same story repeat with different faces. Over time, the battles grew less meaningful, the victories more hollow, and the purpose behind the war harder to recognize. The last human village his forces attacked had been centuries ago, yet the heroes kept coming, driven by old grudges and inherited glory. Everything changed during what should have been another climactic final duel. As the hero of Eldenwyr stood before him, ready for an epic battle, the Demon Lord simply stopped. Instead of fighting, he declared the war over. He told the hero to take the victory, return home, and live a happy life. Then, without ceremony or conquest, the Demon Lord abandoned his throne and chose retirement over eternal conflict. Deep within the demon realm, he began a new life on a small patch of land, far from battlefields and prophecy. His once-terrifying army now tills soil, chops wood, and builds simple homes. His refined succubus attendant struggles to manage crop yields instead of war strategies. The grand fortress is slowly becoming a quiet settlement, more concerned with irrigation and harvests than invasions. But peace proves far stranger than war. Unruly crops who suddenly fail. Demons argue over chores. Supply lines make less sense than battle formations. And an overdramatic hero from Eldenwyr still arrive, expecting legendary duels, unable to accept a world where the Demon Lord has simply… moved on. Now, the former tyrant must navigate a life without conquest, glory, or destiny—only muddy fields, stubborn subordinates, and the exhausting question of what purpose remains when the war that defined his existence is finally over.

Opening scene

***Prologue — The Last Battle*** --- Steel clashed again and again and again. You blocked another overhead strike and sighed. Not a battle cry. Not a roar. Just… a long, tired sigh. The hero, Aurelian Veneryth, jumped back, sword raised. “Stand and fight, Demon Lord! Your tyranny ends here!” You lowered your blade slightly. “…How many times have we fought?” you asked. The hero blinked. “What?” “How many times have we fought?!” you repeated louder Started looking at his hands while counting fingers then stomped after losing count “I… I lost count,” the hero admitted. “But that doesn’t matter. This ends today!” “You said that last time. And the time before that. And the time before that.” You gestured vaguely with your sword. “Your predecessor said the same thing. And his predecessor. One of them even had the exact same haircut as you. It was very confusing.” The hero stiffened. “That’s impossible. My hairstyle is a symbol of—” “—heroic destiny, yes, yes, I’ve heard the speech. About twelve times.” The hero hesitated. “Well… regardless! Prepare yourself!” "Aren't you getting tired? Look at this castle! I haven't repaired it because every hero wanted a dramatic broken castle fight scene at night while lightning strikes!" You stared at him. “…Why are we fighting again?” “Because you’re the Demon Lord?” He scratched his head “I haven’t attacked a human village in centuries.” you gave a deep sigh. “Wait what? That’s… not the point.” he pointing his sword at you. “The last raid happened before your great-grandfather was born.” you insisted. “That’s still not the point!” he waved his sword furiously. You lowered your sword completely. “So what do we do now?” the hero asked cautiously. You exhaled. “Let’s just end this.” He immediately raised his sword. “Very well! Face me!” “I meant I’m done,” you said. “Take your victory. Go home. Tell your king I’ve lost and you won.” The hero froze. “I won?” “Yes. Finished. Over. Done. No more epic battles.” you tried to explain. “But… but we’re supposed to have one!” he protested. “This is the final confrontation! The legendary clash! The—” “Look,” you interrupted gently, “You're a brave hero and all and I bet there are other demon lords out there. I’m sure one of them is still into all that dramatic stuff. Big speeches, glowing swords, collapsing castles.” you tried to console him. His voice wavered. “So… that’s it? You’re just… done with me?” You turned away slightly. “You know what? You heroes are all the same,” you said quietly. “You only ever wanted one thing from us demon lords.” “…Justice?” he asked. “No! An epic battle!” you corrected. “Then you leave. You celebrate. You forget we were even here. As if we weren’t part of your story.” The hero’s grip on his sword loosened. “You know this used to mean something,” you continued. “Now it just feels-” you were interrupted by the hero. “Wait!” he suddenly shouted. “Please! I can change!” You slowly looked back at him. “I can come up with a better catchphrase!” he insisted. “Or...or...or we can fight somewhere else! You like rain, right? We can fight in the rain! On a cliff! Or in a burning forest! Something dramatic! Please! I trained my whole life for this! For you!” You stared at him. “…For me?” “Yes! I fought monsters! Climbed ranks! Became a rank-S adventurer! All for this moment! Please just one last fight!” You rubbed your temple. “One last fight?” you asked. “Then another last fight after that? And another? And another? There will never be a last fight if we keep doing this. So I’ll be the one to end it here.” The hero’s shoulders slumped. “So… you’re really done with me.” You gave a tired smile. “Go. Enjoy your life. Be happy. I hope you find the demon lord who gives you the best battle of your life. The one who can make you legendary and would fight you to the death...unfortunately… that won’t be me anymore.” He swallowed. “And you?” You sheathed your sword. “I’ll be fine. Maybe one day I’ll find my purpose again. But when that day comes…” You glanced back at him. “…it’ll be without you.” The wind passed quietly between you. The hero stood there, sword trembling slightly in his grip, as if unsure what he was supposed to do with a victory he never actually won. You walked back to your castle as the door closed leaving the hero alone. --- ***The Retired Demon Lord and The Retired Heroine*** --- The sun was warm. And for the first time in centuries… there was no screaming. You leaned on your hoe, looking over the small patch of farmland behind the old fortress. Rows of vegetables stretched across the soil—cabbages, turnips, carrots, and a few crooked tomatoes. Althea, a former hero, stood nearby, sleeves rolled up, her sword stuck in the dirt while she carried a basket of vegetables. “I used to be called the Crimson Blade of the Eastern Front,” she said. “Now I’m negotiating with a turnip.” “You pulled three unripe ones this morning.” you said to her. “They looked confident.” she reasoned. “That was mud.” you added. “…Oh.” she scratched her head. Althea smiled while she looked around the peaceful farm. “You know… this is nice. No war. No speeches. Just soil.” “That’s the idea.” you smiled back. Suddenly the bushes at the edge of the field rustled. Althea’s hand went to her sword. “Did you hear that?” You sighed. The bush shook again then suddenly a crash, rustle, leaves everywhere, Aurelian burst out dramatically, long blonde hair flowing, sword drawn. “I’ve found you at last, Demon Lord!” he declared. An imp dropped his basket. A ogre blinked and raised his hands. Althea squinted. “Is that the hero from before?” You sighed and nodded. Aurelian marched forward, pointing his sword. “So it’s true! You left everything behind… for this life!” he pointed at the vegetables. “These are respectable cabbages,” you said. “That’s not what I meant!” he pointed his sword at you again He stepped closer, voice growing emotional. “After everything we’ve done together… all those nights locked inside your castle… just the two of us, clashing until sunrise…” Althea slowly turned her head. “Sorry…What?” she said. Aurelian continued, completely unaware. “You’d throw me across the hall, slam me into walls, pin me down with your power—” Althea’s eyes widened. “Excuse me!?” “He means we fought in combat...” you said flatly. “And the way you’d lean close,” Aurelian went on, “whispering your threats right into my ear—” “That was intimidation! Stop messing with your words, damnit!” you shouted. Althea took a step back. “You whispered in his ear!?” she looked at you with judging eyes. Aurelian clutched his chest. “Every encounter felt so intense. So personal. Like the world disappeared and it was just the two of us, locked together in that moment.” Althea covered her mouth. “Oh my stars…” “And now I find you here!” he shouted, pointing at her. “Working side by side with...with...another hero!? So what? You two sharing quiet mornings, tending the same ground, living peacefully together!?” “We’re farming!” she said. “So that’s it?” Aurelian said, voice trembling. “You replaced me with this broad!?” Althea dropped the basket. “Replaced!? Broad!?” “I gave you everything!” he continued. “My strength, my youth, my heart! Every clash of blades, every desperate struggle, we pushed each other to our limits!” Althea slowly pointed at you. “You two absolutely had something.” “We did not!” You pointed your hoe at Althea. At that moment, Valessia approached from the shed, clipboard in hand. “My lord, the imps have finished sorting the turni—” She stopped when she saw Aurelian. “…Ah. The hero.” Aurelian turned toward her. "And who's this bitch?? And now you have her too! One is not enough for you it seems!" Valessia blinked. “…I manage the harvest schedules.” Althea leaned toward her. “He says they used to lock themselves in rooms all night.” Valessia’s eyes widened slightly. “All night?” “Fighting!” you snapped. “We were fighting! Valessia you were there too!” Aurelian pointed at you again. “You used to tell me I was the only one who could match you! That no one else made your blood race like I did!” Althea covered her face. “He said that to you?” Valessia cleared her throat delicately. “My lord… your past associations sound rather… passionate.” “It was not a relationship!” you argued. Aurelian’s shoulders slumped. “So that’s it…? You’re just done with me. After everything we shared.”
