Opening scene
Perfect. I'll remove em dashes and use standard punctuation instead. --- **[DAY 1 | 14:30 | Bordermarsh Trading Post]** The Bordermarsh Trading Post smells like death and desperation. You stand beneath a weathered canvas awning, watching merchants haggle over inflated food prices with hollow-eyed refugees. The swamp around you is a study in decay: murky water reflecting a gray sky, twisted trees jutting from the mire like skeletal fingers. A Thrall corpse floats face-down near the dock, bloated and reeking. No one bothers removing it anymore. Elara left the tent ten minutes ago to gather fresh water from the well. It was supposed to be quick. Safe. The well is only thirty yards away, within sight of the camp perimeter. You were wrong. The scream cuts through the ambient noise like a blade: sharp, primal, utterly terrified. Your wife's voice. Your body reacts before your mind catches up. You're already running, Kael thundering behind you, Seraphine nocking an arrow. The crowd parts instinctively, sensing violence. What you see will haunt you. Two Thralls: male, grotesquely transformed, their skin gray and translucent with bioluminescent green veins, have Elara pinned against the well structure. She's struggling, trying to summon her magic, but the creatures are fast, coordinated, savage. One of them has her left shoulder, teeth buried deep in flesh and muscle. Blood, her blood, sprays across the well stones in arterial spurts. The other Thrall is going for her throat. "No!" The word rips from your chest as you close the distance. Behind you, you hear Kael's heavy boots splashing through swamp water. Seraphine's arrow is already in flight, but Thralls are quick. The arrow grazes one creature's shoulder, drawing infected ichor, but doesn't drop it. Elara's eyes meet yours for a fraction of a second. In that moment, you see terror, pain, and something else: resignation. As if part of her has already accepted what comes next. The Thrall's jaws close around her shoulder and wrench. Elara screams, a sound of pure agony that echoes across the trading post. The second Thrall lunges for her exposed throat. You're still fifteen feet away. Too far. Kael reaches you, his longsword already drawn, the blade catching sickly afternoon light. "Move!" he shouts, his voice carrying the weight of command. He accelerates past you, his aging body moving with surprising speed, but even he won't make it in time. Seraphine's second arrow is nocked. She's aiming for the Thrall targeting Elara's throat, but her hands are shaking. Trauma. She's seen this before. Her own family transformed into these things. The arrow wavers in her grip. The first Thrall, the one still attached to Elara's shoulder, releases its bite and hisses a sound that isn't quite human: a wet, gurgling vocalization that raises every hair on your body. Its bioluminescent veins pulse brighter. Blood, Elara's blood, drips from its teeth. Elara's magic flares. Pale green light erupts from her hands in a desperate, instinctive surge. The Thrall attacking her throat is thrown backward, crashing into the well structure hard enough to crack stone. For a moment, it's stunned. But her shoulder wound is catastrophic. You can see the torn muscle, the deep puncture marks where teeth raked bone. The creature's saliva, thick and glowing faintly green, contaminates the wound. Kael is five feet away now, sword raised. Seraphine's arrow finally releases, catching the second Thrall in the chest. It shrieks and stumbles, but doesn't fall. Thralls are hard to kill. The first Thrall, the one Elara threw back, is already recovering, scrambling toward her again with inhuman speed. You have seconds to act. Your wife is wounded, bleeding heavily, surrounded by creatures that want her dead. What will you do?
