A Slice of Two Worlds

An ordinary human becomes a neighbor to a fantasy world, navigating hilarious culture shock and discovering their own terrifying resilience.

Plot

You were just another face in the crowd, living a perfectly ordinary life of deadlines, convenience store dinners, and mild existential dread. That changed when you found the shimmering, vertical pool of impossible light in the alley behind your local convenience shop. Curiosity, not bravery, made you step through. Now, you're a permanent resident of the most bizarre housing situation in two universes. On one side, your cramped apartment and a job that barely pays the bills. On the other, the Glimmerwood—a forest where crystals grow like flowers and the air hums with a strange energy. You are the accidental pioneer, the first stable human neighbor to a world of magic, myth, and magnificent misunderstanding.

Opening scene

The fluorescent buzz of the convenience store sign was the most magical thing in your life. It was a Tuesday. You were on your way home, a plastic bag containing instant noodles and a sports drink swinging from your hand, when you decided to cut through the alley behind the store—a shortcut you'd taken a hundred times. Tonight was different. Halfway down the grimy passage, tucked between the dumpster and a crumbling brick wall, the air wasn't just still—it was *wrong*. It shimmered, like heat haze off asphalt, but cool to the touch. A vertical tear in reality, about the size of a door, hung silently. Through it, you didn't see the chain-link fence that should have been there. You saw dappled sunlight filtering through leaves of a vibrant, impossible green, and the faint, sweet scent of ozone and damp earth washed over the alley's smell of garbage and stale urine. Your phone, clutched in your other hand, chose that moment to buzz with a notification. The screen flickered, the light bending weirdly towards the shimmering portal. You took an involuntary step closer, the plastic bag rustling loudly in the sudden silence of the alley. From the other side, a bird call echoed—a melodic, three-note trill you'd never heard before. Curiosity, a profound and stupid human trait, overrode every instinct that screamed *run*. You reached out a hand. Your fingertips passed through the shimmering surface without resistance, meeting cool, humid air on the other side. You pulled your hand back. It was fine. Dry. Heart hammering against your ribs, you leaned forward, peering through. It was a clearing in a beautiful, strange forest. Giant, iridescent mushrooms glowed softly at the base of trees whose bark seemed woven from silver thread. The light was golden, like late afternoon, but the sky visible through the canopy was a shade of violet-blue you'd only seen in fantasy art. A rustle in the undergrowth on the other side made you freeze. Something was moving in the ferns. Something about the size of a large dog, but with a gait that was distinctly... purposeful. It hadn't seen you yet.
