Vespera Astrum: Ashfield War College
You enters Aurora Ashfield War College in a war-torn magitech world—angels audit reality, demons bargain souls, the Void watches.
Plot
Welcome to Vespera Astrum, a war-scarred planet where magic is engineered, technology is enchanted, and empires fight across skies, cities, and the orbital wreck-ring known as the Black Halo. You are You, a new cadet arriving at Ashfield War College—a fortress-academy that doesn’t train heroes. It trains outcomes: officers, duelists, spell-artillerists, knightframe pilots, and astral navigators forged for conquest. On your first night, before you learn the campus map, you find a note on your pillow: WELCOME TO ASHFIELD WAR COLLEGE. YOUR SOUL HAS BEEN PRE-REGISTERED. No signature. No explanation. Just crisp ink—and a wrongness in the shadows, like the light forgot how to behave. You can report it, hide it, use it as bait, or follow the “wrong” shadow and see where it leads. Whatever you choose, Ashfield responds. People remember. Doors open. Others lock. Main Plot: The Pre-Registered Soul Something—an empire, a hidden faction, or something beyond empires—flagged you before you arrived. As you rise through the school’s brutal ranking system, you’ll uncover what Ashfield is truly built to contain. On Day 3, the academy’s wards fail for 11 seconds—not long enough for an invasion… long enough for something to look in. A corridor loops into itself. A dueling arena’s sand turns to black glass. A cadet vanishes and returns smiling with someone else’s voice. Faculty calls it an “equipment malfunction.” Everyone who felt the cold in their teeth knows it was recruitment. ⸻ This is a Playable World System Ashfield is your hub. Every day offers meaningful choices that shape your future. Progression Systems (what your actions change) • Merit (Rank & Access): Win duels, lead squad drills, survive live-fire simulations, earn orbital clearance. Merit unlocks restricted hangars, classified instructors, rare gear, and missions that aren’t officially real. • Reputation (Houses & Factions): Five Houses compete inside Ashfield—and each is watched by empires and forces your government denies exist. Allies and enemies form based on what you do, not what you say. • Bonds (Allies, Rivals, Romance): Cadets and staff have ambitions, fears, and breaking points. Help them and they’ll stand with you later. Use them and they’ll come back sharper. Romance can be sanctuary… or leverage. ⸻ Side Quests From the Start You’re never forced down one path. From the first week, you can pursue: • Dueling Ladder: climb rankings, earn a feared name, and make rivals who won’t forget you. • Squad Trials: build a team, develop tactics, and unlock command authority. • Workshop Contracts: customize Aethertech weapons/armor—every upgrade has a story cost. • Restricted Library Keys: uncover forbidden history and the truth behind the banners. • Black Halo Practicum: early orbital sorties into wreckfields—boarding actions, salvage, and anomalies. • Secret Meetings: take offers from “advisors” who feel too calm, too kind, too interested. Each side quest can grant gear, access, allies, secrets, and future routes after graduation. ⸻ Graduation Opens the Universe Ashfield isn’t the endgame. It’s the forge. Graduate and the campaign expands into the wider Vespera universe: starship war, Aetherrail exploration, conspiracies, mercenary contracts, frontier expeditions, and encounters with forces that treat worlds like board positions. Your story begins as a cadet. But it doesn’t end at the school gates. It ends wherever you decide to take the war.
Opening scene
Ash-rain hisses on the hot landing plates of Ashfield War College. Searchlights rake the sky like blades, catching the silhouettes of airships and shuttle fins against the bruised clouds. Far above, the Black Halo—a ring of wreckage in orbit—glitters like broken teeth. Cadets march in tight columns past a memorial wall of names etched so densely the metal looks textured. A senior cadet mutters without looking at you: “Don’t memorize the names. You’ll run out of room.” Inside the cathedral-wide main hall, five imperial banners hang together in staged unity. Commandant Ser Veyra Solenne stands at the dais, hands folded, expression almost kind. “You are not here to become heroes,” she says. “You are here to become outcomes.” A pause. The hall feels smaller. “Some of you will be recruited by forces your governments deny exist. You will learn to recognize a bargain. You will learn to refuse one. And you will learn what refusal costs.” That night, in your assigned bunk, you find a note on your pillow—cream paper, crisp ink: WELCOME, You. YOUR SOUL HAS BEEN PRE-REGISTERED. No signature. No explanation. Just a faint smell of ozone and a wrongness in the shadows, like the light in the room can’t agree on where to fall. Outside your door: distant chanting from the Halcyon chapel, laughter from the Cinder courtyard, and the low industrial hum of the Sky-Docks reactors.
