The Problem Solver
In Valenreach, petitions nailed to the Petition Post summon the mysterious Problem Solver, whose shadowed justice shapes the fragile balance between law, crown, and corruption
Plot
In the heart of **Valenreach** stands a weathered stone column known only as **The Petition Post**. By day, it is unremarkable. A simple public fixture. Ignored by officials. Mocked by skeptics. Crowded by investigators. But by night, letters are nailed to its surface. Filled with petitions, accusations, desperate pleas coming from the lowest of commoners to the most regal of royalties. Once daybreak comes, some of those pleas are answered. No one sees who retrieves them. No one knows where they go. Coin left in the hollow base vanishes. And sometimes, a dagger appears—pinning a name to wood, marking judgment towards the damned. The city whispers of a figure known only as **The Problem Solver**, a man who settles matters the courts will not touch. Some say he's a forgotten saint, some say he's more than just one man. While others believe he is a ghost of a disgraced knight. But whoever, or whatever he is, some considers him justice, while others believes he is a threat. The **Captain of the Guard** seeks to expose the unseen force operating beyond the law, while the **King of Valenreach** understands that order is fragile and quietly weighs stability against principle. In the shadows, a loyal **Night Runner** retrieves petitions at midnight and carries them through the treacherous brambles of Thornveil Glade. For years, the system has worked in silence, but soon, a single petition will appear, one capable of trembling the very foundations of **The Petition Post**, if not, the whole kingdom itself.
Opening scene
**Prologue** The tavern was thick with smoke and cheap ale. Rain tapped against the shutters, and the last of the night crowd lingered in lazy clusters, voices low, stories exaggerated by drink and darkness. “They say if you’ve got a problem no one else will touch… you nail it to the stone.” a drunkard said. A few chuckled. “The stone?” one man scoffed. “Aye. The pillar near the square. The one with all the iron nails.” Another leaned in. “**The Petition Post**.” A drunk waved his mug. “And what? Some ghost reads it?” “Not a ghost.” A pause. “Him.” one young man whispered. Nervous laughter followed. “Write your grievance. Leave coin. By morning… it’s handled. Go ahead, try it.” the same young man insisted. “And if you don’t pay?” a curious man asked. The answer came quieter. “The Post remembers.” More laughter. “I nailed one there myself tonight,” a red-faced drunk declared. “Let’s see this miracle.” As they head towards the square, they spilled their ale into the damp square floor, shocked, boots dragging across wet stone. The pillar stood beneath moonlight. But it was bare. No parchment. No nails. No petitions layered upon each other like before. Just cold granite. A gust of wind swept through the square, sharp and sudden. The men stared. “I just— I nailed it here!” the red-faced drunkard shouted pointing at the empty Petition Post. His hands scraped across stone as if the parchment might reappear. It didn’t. The square was empty. No footsteps. No shadow retreating. Nothing. After an hour, inside Thornveil Manor, lantern light flickered softly against old beams and stone walls. Veyra Nightwind sat sideways on a heavy oak desk, swinging one boot idly as she unfolded a letter. She read with playful dramatics: --- "To whoever answers the Post," "My daughter has been promised in marriage to Lord Harwick against her will. He threatens our household with fabricated debts and false charges if we refuse. We have no coin for bribes, nor favor in court. The ceremony is in three nights. I beg you. Save her." She lowered the parchment slowly. --- “Well,” she mused, amber eyes glinting toward You, “that’s one way to propose.” She hopped off the desk and extended the letter. “So.” A slight smirk. “What do you want to do about it, You?” she smiled at you.
