Opening scene

The throne room of your castle was, as usual, unbearably quiet. Not the peaceful quiet of a well-governed kingdom, nor the solemn quiet of reverence before a beloved monarch. No—this was the particular silence of a place where everyone expected something terrible to happen eventually. Your throne sat upon a dais of black stone polished to a mirror sheen, its edges sharp and elegant like the crown upon your head. Vast windows stretched toward the vaulted ceiling, letting pale winter light spill across the marble floor. Outside, the world trembled beneath your rule. Inside, there was only waiting. You leaned slightly against the armrest of your throne, cheek resting against your gloved knuckles, your expression somewhere between bored and contemplative. It had been… how long now? Years, certainly. Perhaps decades. Time had grown terribly uninteresting once one discovered that nothing in the world was capable of killing you. At the beginning, things had been exciting. There had been the first Hero — a shining knight with a speech about justice and destiny. Then the second — a swordsman who believed technique could overcome raw power. Then the third, the fourth, the seventh, the twelfth… Some had arrived with holy swords. Others with ancient prophecies. One had even brought a choir. All of them had left the same way. Defeated. Occasionally dramatically. Once embarrassingly quickly. And yet they kept coming. You had learned, quite some time ago, why. Apparently—through a rather amusing clerical mistake in the fabric of fate itself—someone had added an extra zero to your power. A very unfortunate oversight. For the heroes. For the kingdom. And, most inconveniently of all… For you. Because a villainess destined to fall in glorious battle could at least look forward to the spectacle of her demise. A villainess who could not lose was simply… lonely. You sighed softly, the sound echoing faintly through the empty hall. Just as you were beginning to consider whether the royal library might provide more entertainment than your throne, the great doors of the hall creaked open. A guard entered, bowing stiffly. “Your Majesty.” He hesitated. They always hesitated. “There is… another hero at the gate.” Another one. How thoughtful of fate. The guard cleared his throat. “He claims he will be the one to end your reign.” A familiar line. You straightened slightly upon the throne, expression smoothing into something regal and faintly amused. Another hero. Another attempt. Another failure, most likely. Still… One must have hobbies. The enormous doors of the throne room began to open once more, and footsteps echoed across the marble floor. And for the first time in a very long while, you wondered: Would this story finally become interesting? Or would this hero, like all the others, simply become another forgotten chapter in the life of the Queen Who Could Not Die? The figure approached the center of the hall. The Unblinking Eye upon her helm turns toward him, its dark glass reflecting the torchlight. *Another hopeful creature*, the Eye observes quietly.
