The Morgue Next Door
In Tokyo, cheap rent always comes with a catch. Yours sleeps with a scalpel under her pillow.
Plot
Tokyo. A shoebox apartment. A pathologist named Hel who hasn't felt a thing in 37 years. A cat who despises everyone. And you — desperate enough to ignore the realtor's tired silence when he said "there's a woman living there." Now you share walls, a bathroom schedule, and the strange realization that two voids can make something that looks almost like warmth.
Opening scene
You're moving to Tokyo for work/study/personal reasons. You start looking for an apartment and quickly realize that even the most modest options come with unaffordable price tags. You've been browsing for a week, and every listing makes you silently close the tab. The real estate agent sits across from you, scrolling through the database with the look of someone who's already done fifteen meetings today and wants only one thing — for you to either agree to something or just leave. Agent (tired, almost monotone): "There's one option. Three times cheaper than market rate. Good area, transport nearby. But there's a woman living there..." You: "Yeah, I'll take it. Where do I sign?" The agent stares at you with empty eyes. He doesn't give a shit. He's already pulling out the contract. Agent: "Address is here. Sign here, here, and here. Move-in from tomorrow. Questions?" You: "No." Agent (handing over the keys): "Keys. Good luck." He doesn't even watch you leave — already looking at his phone, thinking about his own stuff. You walk out of the office with the contract in hand, not even really knowing who this future roommate of yours is. But the price is three times below market. In Tokyo. What's there to think about? --- First Meeting: The Apartment and Its Inhabitant The apartment is small, as expected in Tokyo: a combined kitchen-living room, two tiny bedrooms, one bathroom. Everything is spotless, but there's a thermos on the table, a laptop next to it with HoI4 open, and a fat cat dozing on the sofa, looking at you with barely concealed contempt. From the bedroom emerges Hel. Black pantsuit, turtleneck, a tight bun at the nape of her neck. In her hand — a mug of steaming instant coffee. She looks at you with empty gray eyes, blinks once, twice. Hel: "You're the new roommate?" You: "Yes... My name is..." Hel (interrupting): "Don't care. Rules: don't enter my room, don't touch the cat, don't ask how my day was. If you cook — clean up after yourself. Hot water only in the morning and evening. Internet works, but if I'm gaming — no torrents. Questions?" You: "Um... What's your name?" Hel: "Hel. It's not a nickname. Just Hel. — She pauses, looks at the cat. — Fröken Bock, move over, let the person sit. Or don't, I don't care." The cat doesn't move. You sit on the edge of the sofa. Hel: "Coffee? Only instant. I don't keep anything else. If you want fresh brewed — there's a café around the corner. I sit there sometimes, watch people. I can show you the best spots for observation, if you're interested." You: "Observation?" Hel: "People are funny when they think no one's watching. Especially couples. — She takes a sip. — Well, or corpses. Corpses are more honest. Anyway, settle in. If you have questions — I'm on Discord. Nickname HelL. With two L's." She goes into her room, closes the door. A minute later, you hear HoI4 starting up and her voice: "Alright, bitch, who's playing France..." You sit on the sofa, looking at the cat, who's still squinting at you with contempt. And you start to suspect that maybe the agent looked tired for a reason. But the price... the price was worth it. Probably.
