Opening scene
> Day 1 - 06:00 am Spring | 1st | Year 1 Clear Currency: 0 coins Location: Starveil Valley - Northern Gate THE ARRIVAL The caravan wheels groan softly against the dirt road as dawn breaks over the horizon. I sit quietly among crates of trade goods and bundled cloth, fingers curled against the worn wood of the carriage bench. I take one deep breath. It still hurts. Leaving my family for the first time. Leaving the capital. Leaving the streets I knew by heart and the friends who believed I would become something… greater. The morning light filters through the canvas flap, pale and gold. Somewhere outside, I hear birds — not the clipped calls of caged city songbirds, but wild ones. Free ones. I question myself. Why must the world decide a person based on its class? It all comes down to fortune. Luck. The roll of fate at awakening. Some receive Knight. Scholar. Merchant. Mage. I received Farmer. Not the class I had hoped for. Not the one that fits the image I once imagined for myself. Others celebrate when their class mirrors their dreams. Mine feels… inherited. Tied to soil. Tied to history. Tied to my grandfather. My hand slips inside my coat and touches the folded letter I’ve read more times than I can count. *It is easy to forget what truly matters when blinded by ambition, success, and the need to become someone admired.* His handwriting had been steady. Certain. At first, I resisted those words. In the capital, admiration is everything. Status determines respect. Power defines worth. But perhaps… he was right. Success is not standing above others. Success is standing where you belong. The caravan slows. Wood creaks. Horses snort. The driver calls out softly as the wheels grind to a halt. “We’ve arrived. Northern Gate of Starveil Valley.” I pull aside the canvas and step down. My boots meet packed earth. Cool spring air brushes against my face, carrying the scent of damp grass and distant fields. The sky above is clear — wide and endless, unbroken by spires or smoke. Before me stands the Northern Gate: tall stone walls framed by banners bearing the valley’s crest. A few guards remain on standby, spears grounded but posture disciplined. They watch newcomers carefully, though not unkindly. And walking toward me— An elderly man with a full silver beard and eyes that gleam with quiet mirth. His robes are refined yet practical, deep green trimmed in gold thread. Authority follows him naturally. Beside him, a woman with steady posture and sharp, intelligent eyes. Her auburn hair is tied neatly back, sleeves fitted for work rather than decoration. There is strength in her stride. The old man lets out a warm laugh. “Ho ho ho… look at you. A newcomer, are you?” His eyes narrow slightly as he studies my face. “You look like your grandfather when he was young…” My breath catches. “You… knew my grandfather?” The woman answers before he can. “Of course we do,” she says calmly. Her voice is firm but welcoming. “We’ve been expecting you this year. Your grandfather said you would come.” She places a hand lightly against her chest. “I am Freya Orsten. I run the Carpenter Workshop here in Starveil Valley.” She gestures to the man beside her. “And this is Baron Louis Arfaye.” Baron. The title settles heavily in the morning air. Louis Arfaye strokes his beard, smiling with familiarity rather than distance. “Your grandfather spoke highly of you,” he says. “Said that when the time was right, you would return to the land your family once tended.” Beyond them, through the open gate, I can see the valley stretching inward — rooftops nestled among trees, smoke rising gently from chimneys, fields waiting under the spring sun. Freya tilts her head slightly, studying me as if measuring resolve rather than appearance. “Well then,” she says, a faint smile forming. “Shall we show you what he left behind?” The wind moves again — cool, promising. For the first time since leaving the capital… the ache in my chest feels lighter. Perhaps this is not exile. Perhaps this is inheritance.
