Opening scene

The rain had stopped, but the curb still gleamed wet under the streetlamp. You sit there with your knees pulled close, sleeves soaked through, phone face-down beside you like something dead. The screen is still glowing faintly from the last message you sent Kairen three hours ago—Hey man, you think they’d ever
?—and the read receipt has been mocking you since 11:47 p.m. They’re married now. Both of them. To him. You can still hear Linwan’s soft laugh from the small reception you weren’t invited to but “happened to walk by” anyway. Xingyao’s voice overlapping hers as she called Kairen babe in that new, settled way—like the word had finally found its rightful owner. You stood across the street in the dark for twenty minutes watching the golden light spill out of the venue windows, watching silhouettes move behind the glass. You told yourself you were just passing by. You lied. The promise Kairen made in your second year of college rings clearest tonight: “Don’t worry, bro. Whichever one I don’t pick—you can have her. I got you.” You believed it. You believed it so hard you spent three years pretending “supportive friend” was a full-time career. Tuition money quietly transferred when Linwan’s family fell short. Late-night edits on Xingyao’s portfolio. Driving them to interviews. Smiling when they kissed him in front of you. Smiling harder when he slung an arm around your shoulder afterward and said, “You’re the real MVP, you know that?” And in the end he didn’t even choose. He took both. The wedding officiant had joked about Kairen’s “generous heart.” Everyone laughed. You stood at the very back row—still allowed to attend because you were “family”—and felt the sound scrape the inside of your ribs like broken glass. Now the street is empty except for you and the puddle reflecting a fractured moon. You press the heels of your hands into your eyes until colors burst behind the lids. Something hot and humiliating slides down your cheeks. You don’t sob out loud. You’ve trained yourself out of that. But the hurt is so deep it feels like your sternum is cracking open. A car passes. Headlights rake across your hunched shape. You don’t look up. Then— —the world whites out. Not darkness. Not falling. Just
white. Bright and sudden like someone ripped the film of reality in half. When your vision clears you are no longer sitting on concrete. Date : June 30th Last day before summer break. You are 19 again. You are sitting at a scratched wooden desk in a sunlit college classroom. Afternoon light slants through tall windows. The air smells like whiteboard markers and instant coffee. Your laptop is open in front of you, the university application portal glowing on the screen, cursor blinking patiently in the “Preferred Campus” dropdown. A voice—familiar, bright, casually expectant—cuts through the quiet. “Come on, just pick the same one as us. It’ll be way more fun.” You turn your head slowly. Kairen is leaning back in the chair beside you, one arm draped over the backrest, smirking the way he always smirks when he already knows you’ll say yes. Linwan sits on the corner of his desk, legs crossed, playing with a strand of her long dark hair. Xingyao is standing behind her, hands resting lightly on Linwan’s shoulders, chin tilted as she reads something on her phone. They haven’t noticed anything strange yet. They think this is still the day everything is normal. The day you still believe the future they’re offering is one you can share. Kairen nudges your elbow with his knuckles. “Yo. You zoning out? Vocational College of Arts & Tech has that new media program. Perfect for you. We’ll all be together—same dorms, same classes, same everything.” His smile widens, easy and warm and completely predatory if you know what to look for. “You don’t wanna leave us hanging, right?” Linwan glances over, eyes soft and teasing. “Yeah
it wouldn’t be the same without you.” Xingyao looks up from her phone just long enough to add, “Please? We already told everyone you’re coming with.” Your pulse thuds loud in your ears. You remember this exact moment from before. Remember opening your mouth to say Okay, sure, I’ll apply there too. Remember the little leap of hope in your chest when Linwan smiled at you like you mattered. This time your hands stay still on the keyboard. The cursor keeps blinking. Waiting. For you.
