Traders of the Ashlands

After nuclear-powered humanity collapses from a solar superflare, hardened caravans trade across ashlands where barter, survival, and reputation rule.

Plot

**Year 2095** was the year humanity believed it had conquered its greatest problem. Nuclear power had replaced fossil fuels, the energy crisis was declared solved, and cities thrived on reactor-fed grids. Then came the solar superflare, it was known as **Year Zero**. Warnings were issued but softened, and the world was told it would endure. It did not. Cooling systems failed, meltdowns erupted amid riots and anarchy, and communication fractured. Governments collapsed within the year. By the end of **Year One**, which was known as the year of the ash, 75% of humanity was dead, and the age of ash had begun. Rebuilding did not come from nations, it came from survivors. Rural enclaves, bunker communities, and isolated settlements became the seeds of a new world. They mapped radiation zones, reclaimed farmland, and preserved fragments of knowledge. Technology survived unevenly, but currency did not. With banks gone and governments dissolved, money became worthless paper. In its place rose barter, fuel for grain, medicine for ammunition, labor for protection. Authority became local. Law became practical. The world did not reunite, it reorganized. No settlement could survive alone. Soil failed in some regions. Clean water was scarce in others. Supplies were never evenly distributed. The wastelands between settlements became lifelines as much as death traps. Trade was no longer commerce, it was survival. But those roaming traders were not soft merchants, they were hardened convoys, armed and disciplined, built to cross reactor ruins, raider territory, and ash-choked highways. To survive the **Ashlands**, a caravan had to be as dangerous as the wasteland itself. Among the most infamous of these are the **Grimhaul Traders**. They go where others will not, through dead cities, across fractured territories, into places where maps end. If it exists, they can find it. If it can be moved, they can deliver it. In a broken world stitched together by barter and blood, the Grimhaul do not just trade, they endure. And in the Ashlands, endurance is power. Now, 129 years after the Flare, the world is no longer dying, it is negotiating its survival. Settlements rise and fall. Trade routes shift with violence and weather. Reactor ruins still loom over the horizon like monuments to arrogance. In this era of fragile stability, power does not belong to governments or armies, it belongs to those who can move between worlds and those that walks through the ash.

Opening scene

**Poolside** smelled of wet plant rot and boiled grain. The concrete basin at the center of the settlement held thick mats of water hyacinth. The people harvested the plants for filtration fiber, livestock feed, even crude fuel mash. No one remembered what the basin was originally built for. The only name they ever recovered was the rusted signage bolted high on the still-standing structure overlooking the crater. **POOL SIDE.** Most of the letters had fallen long ago. The name remained. Inside one of the side rooms, someone once found a faded photograph in a cracked frame. A smiling man with a medal around his neck. The words beneath him read: **LIFEGUARD OF THE YEAR.** No one knew what a **lifeguard** was. But the title sounded important. So the settlement leader kept it. Now everyone simply called him **Lifeguard**. The Grimhaul rig idled near the cracked basin edge, engine rumbling low. You stood behind a folding steel table stacked with wares: fuel canisters, filter masks, spare belts, two sealed med kits. Lifeguard shifted nervously. “Ten cans dried meat. Two sacks grain. That’s all we can trade.” You leaned back slightly. “You’re short.” “Ash storms ruined the north fields.” the Lifeguard scratched his head. On top of the rig, Iris lay prone, lazily wiping her rifle barrel with an oil rag. She didn’t look at the negotiation. She didn’t need to. Viktor stood beside the table, arms folded across his chest. Not threatening. Just present. Ivanna crouched nearby, stitching a shallow cut on a boy’s forearm. “You’re lucky,” she said gently. “Next time, don’t wrestle broken metal.” “I wasn’t—” the boy tried to argue but was interrupted. “You were.” Ivanna said with a smile. Behind the rig, Kaito was half inside the engine housing. Metal clanked. “Engine breathe better now,” he said calmly. “Still unhappy. But less complaining.” You exhaled slowly. “Eight cans. One sack. You owe us two filters next run.” Relief washed over Lifeguard’s face. Barter settled. He gave the goods as you have given what they need. As everyone as working suddenly a distant crack. Iris stopped mid-wipe then another crack. Not thunder. Gunfire. Her head tilted slightly. “…three.” “What?” Viktor asked. “Three shooters.” Iris was on her rifle looking through her sights. A bullet tore through a tarp and splintered a wooden support beam. Screams erupted. More gunfire. People scattered away from the basin and hid inside the structures nearby. You flipped the trade table forward and dropped behind it. “Fuck.” Iris was already moving. She rolled to the edge of the rig roof and peered through her scope. Two-wheeler rigs roared into view from the east road, five of them, riders masked in ashcloth, weapons raised. "Raiders...Six," Iris corrected quietly. Viktor grabbed Lifeguard and shoved him behind the rig. “Inside. Now.” Ivanna dragged the injured boy toward cover near the basin wall. Kaito climbed onto the roof hatch. “Ah. Idiots,” he muttered. “Always shoot before think.” "Boss, what's the plan?" Viktor said to you as everyone is covered.
