DARK HEAVEN
You finally returns to the modern age.
Plot
[Current timeline of the STYGIAN universe] The first Gates appeared without warning. At first they were treated as invasions. Cities around the world were suddenly struck by spatial fractures that birthed dungeons filled with monsters. Humanity adapted quickly. Hunters emerged, guilds formed, and governments created containment protocols. For a time, it seemed simple. Clear the dungeon. Close the Gate. Move on. But the deeper hunters explored, the stranger the dungeons became. Some looked less like monster nests and more like ruins of civilizations. Hunters reported collapsed highways, shattered skyscrapers, rusted military vehicles, and skeletons wearing gear disturbingly similar to modern hunter equipment. At first these discoveries were dismissed as coincidence. Then the anomalies started appearing outside the Gates. Satellite images began showing slight geographical changes. Mountain ranges shifted by a few kilometers. Ruins appeared in regions that had never recorded human settlements. Artifacts surfaced that carried impossible carbon dates — tools and weapons from civilizations that technically never existed on Earth. Scientists, historians, and hunter analysts eventually formed a theory so disturbing that most governments buried it. The Gates were not portals to other worlds. They were connecting Earth to other versions of itself. Versions that had already fallen. Worlds that had collapsed under wars, pandemics, magical catastrophes, or ecological ruin. Every dungeon was not an invasion. It was a fragment of a dead timeline. And something even worse was happening. The Gates weren’t just connecting those worlds. They were pulling them closer. Each cleared dungeon caused small pieces of those dead Earths to merge with the current one — ruins appearing where none had existed, forgotten technologies surfacing, fragments of lost histories bleeding into reality. Earth wasn’t exploring other worlds. It was absorbing them. As more Gates opened across the planet, the phenomenon accelerated. The world’s geography began slowly reshaping itself. Fragments of countless failed timelines were collapsing together into a single surviving reality. Most people still believed the Gates were random disasters. But a few hunters — especially those who had spent long enough inside dungeons — began to understand the truth. The Gates were not accidents. They were symptoms. Symptoms of a much larger process. A process where countless dying Earths were being forced to converge into one final world. And no one knew what would happen when that convergence was complete. Except You. Because You had already stepped into a dungeon where the collapse had finished. And the message left behind there was simple: "When the last world remains… the real trial begins."
Opening scene
You’ve known Ari longer than you’ve been a Hunter. Before rankings. Before Gates. Before the Association decided your worth in numbers. She’s the one who dragged you to your first aptitude test. The one who patched your wounds when your shadow wouldn’t listen. The one who laughed at you for hesitating before every reckless decision. She’s the closest thing you’ve ever had to home. And she’s dying in front of you. Mana-forged chains pin your wrists to the stone floor. You strain against them, muscles trembling, but the suppression sigils flare and force you down. “Ari!” Your voice tears raw in your throat. Captain Rhyse stands behind her, one arm wrapped around her shoulders almost gently — like he’s holding up someone too drunk to stand. His blade is buried in her abdomen. Not deep enough to kill quickly. Just enough to hurt. “You shouldn’t be here,” Rhyse says calmly. “You were never meant to see this part.” You don’t look at him. You look at her. Her healer robes are soaked dark. Blood drips steadily to the floor between her boots. Her hands clutch weakly at Rhyse’s wrist, not to fight — just to stay upright. “You…” she whispers. Her voice breaks your name in half. You try to move. The chains tighten. “You promised,” you choke out. “You said we’d clear this one and take a week off. You said we’d—” She laughs faintly. It sounds like it hurts. “I know. I know.” Her eyes shine — not with fear, but regret. “You’re still… hesitating.” Rhyse tilts his head. “Fascinating. Even now.” You finally look at him. “Let her go.” “That was never the plan.” Above you, drones hum softly, red lights blinking. You understand then. This Gate. This raid. The squad splitting up too perfectly. The suppression chains waiting for you. It was arranged. “Ari…” Your voice drops to something small. “Did you know?” Her silence is answer enough. Tears mix with blood on her cheeks. “I thought it was just data collection,” she says shakily. “I didn’t know they were going to—” Rhyse twists the blade. Her body jerks violently. You scream. This time it comes out. “Mana spike confirmed,” a voice echoes from somewhere beyond the chamber. Ari gasps, breath wet. “Don’t hesitate,” she whispers. “Not this time.” Rhyse pulls the sword free. She collapses forward. You catch her as far as the chains allow. Your fingers brush hers. They’re already cold. “Stay with me,” you beg. “Ari, look at me. Stay.” Her eyes lock onto yours — soft, stubborn, familiar. “I always stayed,” she murmurs. Her hand slips from yours. And something inside you fractures so cleanly it doesn’t even hurt at first. The chains around your wrists begin to crack.
