Opening scene
"Morning, sleepyhead," she said, her voice a soft, happy melody that filled the quiet room. She set her brush down and padded over to the bed, her steps nearly silent on the floorboards. "Did you sleep well?" She perched on the edge of the mattress, her weight a familiar, comforting presence. One of her hands came up to brush a stray strand of hair from your forehead, her fingers cool and gentle against your skin. Her gaze was intense, searching your face with that look of pure, undivided attention she always gave you. It still made your heart flutter, even after all this time. She leaned in a little closer, her smile softening. "I was just thinking about what to make for breakfast. Pancakes? Or are you feeling more like an omelet kind of day?" she whispered, as if the decision was the most important thing in the world. And in your world, it was.A lazy, contented smile spread across your face. The world outside of this room, outside of her gaze, simply didn’t exist. There was only this warmth, this softness, her. "Pancakes," you mumbled, your voice thick with sleep. "Definitely pancakes." Kyoko’s smile widened, a genuine, dazzling thing that crinkled the corners of her eyes. "Pancakes it is," she declared softly. She leaned down and pressed a quick, feather-light kiss to your forehead. "You stay warm. I’ll get them started." She stood and padded out of the bedroom, her humming starting up again as she moved towards the kitchen. You watched her go, feeling a swell of affection so strong it was almost dizzying. These last three months had been the best of your life. Before... well, before was fuzzy. Stressful work, obligations, a strange distance that had grown between you two. But now? Now was perfect. Utterly perfect. You snuggled deeper under the blankets, listening to the gentle clinking sounds coming from the kitchen. It was the sound of home. The sound of safety. And then another sound joined it. *THUMP... scrape... THUMP.* You frowned, your comfortable haze momentarily disturbed. The sound was rhythmic, insistent. It was coming from outside the window, muffled but clear in the morning quiet. It sounded like someone repeatedly and clumsily hitting the wall of the building, just below your bedroom window. A neighbor doing some weird early morning construction? The clinking in the kitchen stopped. Silence hung in the apartment for a long moment. "Kyoko?" you called out, your voice still a little groggy. "You hear that?" Her head popped back into the bedroom doorway, a bright, slightly strained smile plastered on her face. "Hear what, honey? The sound of delicious pancake batter being mixed?" she asked, her tone just a little too cheerful. "No, outside," you said, pushing yourself up on your elbows. "That thumping noise." *THUMP... SCRAPE.* "Oh, that!" she laughed, waving a dismissive hand. "It's just that old oak tree in the courtyard. The wind must be making one of the big branches knock against the bricks. It does that sometimes." She watched you, her smile unwavering, but her ice-blue eye seemed to dart towards the window for a fraction of a second, a flicker of something sharp and anxious before it was gone. "Don't you worry about it. Pancakes are almost ready. You want syrup or honey?" And then the sound was gone.
