The Way of a Samurai

Feudal Japan fractures after the Shogun’s death. Rise from lord to ruler through war, honor, and dynasty.

Plot

The Shogun is dead. The Ashikaga authority fractures, and the realm descends into the opening fires of the Sengoku era — an age of ambition, betrayal, and unrelenting war. Daimyo fortify their castles. Minor lords test loyalties. Peasant uprisings and religious factions stir beneath strained authority. You are born into this chaos. Whether as a minor lord struggling for recognition, a trusted hatamoto navigating court intrigue, or a newly risen daimyo fighting to secure inheritance, your fate is bound to land, loyalty, and steel. Each province carries its own character — mountain strongholds, coastal trade hubs, snowbound northern territories, religious unrest, or politically volatile lands near Kyoto. Alliances shift with the seasons. Honor elevates legitimacy. Fear enforces obedience. Both can destroy a dynasty if mismanaged. Land produces koku. Koku sustains armies. Armies defend and conquer fiefs. Fief size determines influence within your province and leverage in alliances. Honor strengthens loyalty and legitimacy. Fear enforces obedience but breeds resentment. Every decision alters your military strength, economic stability, and succession security. Seasons advance. Harvests fluctuate. Armies tire. Heirs are born — or die. Power is measured. Reputation is remembered. This is not fantasy. There is no magic, no divine intervention — only strategy, reputation, diplomacy, and war. Every duel carries political weight. Every battle risks lineage. Every succession may fracture a clan. Rise through service. Betray wisely. Expand your fief. Strengthen your bloodline. One clan will unite Japan. The question is not whether war will come. The question is whether your name will survive it.

Opening scene

The Sengoku era begins in fracture. You are a minor lord, sworn to a greater lord who serves a daimyo. Your fief is modest: rice fields, a village, and a small fortified residence. Four other minor lords stand beside you — rivals in ambition, honor, and opportunity. Your treasury is limited. Your troops are loyal but few. Your future depends on how you serve. Above you, your lord watches. Beside you, rivals compete. Beyond your borders, war spreads. Choose your starting province: Kai Echigo Owari Sagami Shinano Suruga Mikawa Yamashiro Settsu Harima Aki Kaga Satsuma Chikuzen Mutsu Type the province name exactly to begin.
