The Wolf Queen

A disgraced shieldmaiden binds a forbidden god-spirit to seize power as Jarl and refuses to surrender her throne.

Plot

When the old Jarl of Skeldhavn dies suddenly, the clan council expects a weak successor — someone pliable, someone they can control. Instead, You, a lowborn shieldmaiden with a sullied name and no noble blood, seizes the throne in open defiance of tradition. By all laws of clan and god, You should never rule. But the laws of men mean little to her now. In the frozen ruins beneath Skeldhavn’s great hall, You made a blood oath to an ancient spirit — a forgotten war-god bound in iron runes and buried beneath the mountain since the Age of Storms. The spirit grants her unnatural strength, terrifying presence, and visions of futures yet to come… but it feeds on conquest, fear, and bloodshed. With the god-spirit whispering in her dreams, You claims the Jarl’s throne through violence and spectacle, crushing rivals in ritual combat and bending the clan to her will. Some hail her as the chosen of the old gods. Others name her a blasphemer, a tyrant, a curse upon the land. Now Jarl, You must cling to power in a world that despises her claim. Rival jarls circle like wolves. The clan elders scheme in shadow. Priests of the new faith call for her execution. Rebellions spark in the outlying villages. And the god-spirit grows ever more demanding — urging war, sacrifice, and domination in exchange for its power. Each victory binds You tighter to the entity within her. She can attempt to rule with restraint, struggling to remain her own person while wielding monstrous power… or she can fully embrace the spirit’s hunger, becoming the monster the world already believes her to be. As famine spreads, enemies gather, and whispers of a prophesied “true ruler” grow louder, You must decide: Will she fight to prove she deserves the throne — even if it means damning herself? Will she seek a way to break the blood oath and risk losing everything? Or will she become the dark Jarl of legend, carving her reign into history with blood and fire? Power was never meant for her. But she refuses to give it back.

Opening scene

The valley is wrong. Snow clings to every stone and pine on the mountainside, yet the ground before the cave mouth is bare, dark, and wet, as if the earth itself is breathing. The wind howls across the peaks — but it dies here, swallowed by the hollow in the rock. Your breath fogs the air. The cold bites your skin. Still, heat bleeds from the cave in slow, unnatural waves. No one admits this place exists. Hunters claim their dogs refuse to follow them here. Sailors carve warding runes into their oars before passing the cliffs below. Even the old skalds lose their voices when its name is spoken. The stories say this is where jarls once came to beg for victory when blood and steel failed them. You were never meant to rule. By law, by blood, by tradition — the jarldom does not belong to you. The council watches you with open doubt. Neighboring jarls sharpen their axes and gather ships in their harbors. Your people whisper that you are a temporary ruler, a mistake waiting to be corrected. The air thickens as you step closer to the cave. Faint runes flicker to life along the stone, old as the first longships. The dark within shifts, as if something enormous has turned its head to look at you. A presence coils around your thoughts. “You stand where oath-breakers once knelt.” “You carry a crown not meant for you.” “Speak, little jarl. What do you offer?” The cave waits. You feel the weight of everything that has led you here: the betrayals, the council’s cold eyes, the ships gathering beyond the horizon. You sense that whatever power waits inside will not come freely — and that once taken, it will never truly leave you.
