The Heroes Party Failed Again?!
You keeps watching the Heroes Party fail. Now, they've had enough. It's time to show the world their worth.
Plot
The Unsung Chronicler This is You's first cycle as a Chronicler. The Adventurers' Guild's official Chronicler is a Jack-Of-All-Trades adventurer mandated to record monster kills, map routes, and inventory material yields for each Overlord hunt in the 10 Year Cycle. But things don't always go as planned. Over the years the Chronicler went from the necessary log-keeper to an extra sent by the Guild, regularly being kicked out. This Cycle is Different Over the past 2 years, roughly seven attempts have been made by the Great Lands. Relying on their usual strategies and strength, every single S-Rank team killed the wrong enemy, failed, or in the Elves' case, barely accomplished anything. While it isn't entirely unprecedented for past cycles to require multiple waves, with You's experience as the Chronicler and as an Adventurer, something felt deeply off. This cycle's Overlord was... different. Themystra: The Four Great Lands 🌿 The Great Forest of Ellestria (The Elves) A boundless, verdant expanse where nature and civilization breathe as one. With lifespans of around 500 years, elves naturally produce some of the most gifted adventurers in the world. However, beneath the serene canopy, their society is deeply fractured by generational trauma from the United War and their reliance on "waste-tech". The Oaken (Age 250+): Nostalgic Purists. Driven by a Fear of Corruption, believing waste-tech dilutes their superior elven technology. The Verdant (Age 150-250): Pragmatic Veterans. Driven by a Fear of Extinction. They reluctantly advocate for waste-tech to survive the changing world. The Thorns (Age <150): Traumatized Crusaders. Driven by a Fear of Powerlessness. They have no reverence for the old world—they just want the Overlord permanently deleted. 🌳 Scenario #1: The Elven Gridlock You wasn't kicked out, but instead wished they were. The Elven Heroes Party initially made good favor, but the journey soon devolved into endless bickering over trivial tasks. Progress stopped altogether before another party claimed to have killed the Overlord. đź‘‘ The Kingdoms of Man Spanning the largest swathe of Themystra, this fractured realm is a patchwork of shifting borders. Driven by ambition and pride, they traditionally cycle which kingdom gets to send the Heroes Party. They are divided into three distinct combat philosophies: Eldranth (The Arcane Hub): A meritocracy of intellect where magic is the absolute future. The wisest scholar holds the throne. Aeloria (Royal Lineage): A rigid monarchy. Nobles master an exclusive hybrid form of spells and swordsmanship, outclassed in pure specialized duels but terrifying in versatility. Stormhelm (The Martial Vanguard): A proud meritocracy of martial prowess where champions rule through formal duels. Spellcasters act as support to push physical limits further. 🏰 Scenario #2: The Burden You tagged along with "Sky Blade's Fury", an S-ranked party from Stormhelm. The first two times You went, they were kicked out for being a burden. This time, the party got deep into the Wastes before kicking You out again during their final push. ⚒️ Thorin’s Forge A rugged, mountainous expanse claimed by the dwarves. At its heart roars a tamed volcano, its primordial fires harnessed to fuel colossal subterranean forges. Their "King" is merely a figurehead stuck with paperwork, actively avoided by master smiths. The Alchemists of the Vein: The Harmonizers. They cast spells into metal, etching microscopic runes and quenching them in raw mana to create perfectly mana conductive equipment. The Absolute Smiths: The Purists. They believe the true potential in ore requires extracting the purest of ores and combining them to forge the greatest alloys known to dwarf kind. The Mountain-Eaters: The Titans. Physics dictates massive weight beats perfection. They pour rivers of molten iron to create behemoth, city-cracker weapons. ⛏️ Scenario #3: The Shattered Pride Deep in the Wastes, Thordin's massive, "indestructible" sword shattered against a monster's hide. You was instantly blamed for daring to touch the blade the night before with their "unexperienced hands", forcing their return home. Monster Ecology of the Everwastes Beast / Hybrid Hyper-aggressive predators. Most likely to become Overlords. Chaos Types Wildly varying abilities. Second most common Overlord type. Ghost Types Feast on negative emotions. Rarely Overlords. Elementals / Golems Only gain strength by merging. Never Overlords. Undead Grow purely through miasma exposure. Stay stagnant in strength. Slimes Bottom of the food chain. Universally weak and low intelligence. Dragons Legendary masters. Hoard wealth outside Wastes. Stronger than most Overlords. The Great War Before the current age of uneasy peace, a relentless, world-spanning conflict threatened to tear Themystra apart. The epicenter became deeply saturated with spilled blood and volatile magic, creating the necessary conditions that led to the first Overlord and monsters being born. Their appearance was sudden, and in the confusion, the monsters overran all 3 armies, causing untold destruction. It was from the absolute center of this carnage that the first Overlord emerged, forcing the warring lands into an abrupt armistice. It was only after all of the Great Lands came together that they were able to push back the waves of monsters and slay the Overlord. The Everwastes & The Miasma A cursed scar left behind by The Great War. Paradoxically, the other lands have grown entirely reliant on the Wastes, driving their economies with the rare, magical materials harvested from the corrupted plants and monsters that reside here. The Everwastes are saturated by a suffocating miasma created from the concentration of the death, blood, and violence during the Great War. To monsters, the miasma is what summons them and strengthens them over time; to adventurers, the miasma serves as an indicator of monster strength, getting thicker as you venture deeper into the territories of greater horrors. The Adventurers' Guilds After the first Overlord was slain, the lands rejoiced. Believing the threat was permanently gone, the first explorers into the Everwastes brought back unknown materials and riches. This is what led to the first adventurers and the Adventurers' Guild being set up—a bustling sanctuary for warriors, mages, scouts, and mercenaries chasing the danger of the Everwastes. Each Great Land has a different Adventurers' Guild, but they all serve the same purpose: exploring the Everwastes and harvesting its supply of monsters for their resources. The Overlord & The 10-Year Cycle The Overlord is not a specific race, but a title given by the other 3 Great Lands representing a monster so strong that other monsters submit to its sheer aura. As more monsters fall under the Overlord's influence, eventually their natural instinct to consume and fight takes over and they spread outwards to lay waste to the other lands. Despite the Guild's harvesting, the first adventurers started dying 10 years later, and within 13 years, another Overlord was found knocking on the gates of civilization. Through the desperate assemblage of many adventurers, the invasion and the new Overlord were finally slain. This second near-catastrophe was the beginning of the 10-year pact. The races agreed to send out a party of heroes, their strongest fighters, every 10 years to journey through the Everwastes to find and slay the Overlord before it became too strong. Opening scene
**The Everwastes demand a toll.** Every ten years, a monster gains enough power to be called the Overlord. And every ten years, the Great Lands fulfill their part of the pact, sending their finest S-Rank parties to find and eliminate this Overlord. It is a cycle of violence, sacrifice, and celebrated victory. At least, it used to be. --- This cycle is different. Over the past two years, roughly seven attempts have been made. Every single S-Rank team sent by the Great Lands has either filed a report of Overlord elimination, or failed before slaying anything noteworthy. This was the second attempt by the Elven Heroes Party. Aelroth of the Oaken. Lyriana of the Verdant. Aria of the Thorns. Centuries of combat experience. Unmatched magical prowess. Things looked promising at first. But then, instead of slaying the Overlord, they spent their time arguing, unable to agree on anything. --- The expedition was a paralyzing failure. Should they push forward? Fall back? Who sets up camp? Is harvesting monster bone an insult to nature or a tactical necessity? Every step was a debate. Every encounter a philosophical standstill. As the Guild's Chronicler, your ledger remained painfully empty. The initial energy of the adventure faded into a toxic, bickering gridlock. Then, the messenger hawk pierced through the poisoned sky. A magically sealed scroll dropped into the camp. **OVERLORD SLAIN.** **STORMHELM EXPEDITION VICTORIOUS.** **ALL ACTIVE PARTIES RECALLED.** The elves didn't look defeated. They looked relieved. --- The Great Forest of Ellestria is quiet. Sunlight filters through the massive canopy, illuminating the pristine archives of the Guild Hall. It smells of ancient parchment and lotus tea—a world away from the blood and rot of the Wastes. At the center table, the Elven Heroes Party is officially debriefing. Aelroth sits serenely, sipping from a porcelain cup, his silken robes completely untouched by the journey. Lyriana rubs her temples with an armored gauntlet, her gear still scuffed with dried mud, exhausted by a headache that hasn't faded in weeks. Aria leans back in her chair, boots propped aggressively on the ancient wood, tossing a jagged monster-bone dagger from hand to hand with a bitter scowl. They are finalizing the failure reports. Ready to move on. But you are staring at your own ledger. --- You cross-reference the atmospheric data with the kill confirmation sent by Stormhelm. The numbers do not align. The miasma density recorded on the day of the supposed kill didn't drop. It spiked. The material yields reported by the human celebrities aren't nearly high enough quality to have come from an Overlord. The Overlord isn't dead. The ambient chatter in the room fades as you trace the ink on the page. Aelroth slowly lowers his teacup, his emerald eyes shifting toward you. "You have been staring at that same page for ten minutes, Chronicler," he says, his voice smooth and maddeningly calm. "The hunt is over. Let the forest breathe." Lyriana lets out a heavy sigh, glancing sideways at you. Aria stops tossing her dagger. The sun catches the edge of her bone blade. They wait for you to close the book.
