Plot
SHARD: Fragments of Darkness A Dark Fantasy Interactive Tale The World of Lysathria A decade ago, the Four Great Heroes defeated Phobos, the Sovereign of the Abyss. With his dying breath, he cursed the world, fracturing his soul into a thousand pieces. These fragments embed themselves in 1000 random souls, never more, never less, always reappearing when one soul carrying them dies. These shards of darkness brand them as Void Carriers—people cursed with dangerous, dark powers and hunted by the very kingdoms that celebrated the victory. Your Story Begins You are one such Void Carrier. Two years ago, the Sovereign's Curse manifested within you. You don't remember the details of your old life—by design or by disaster, that past is yours to define. What you do know is the cold weight of the dark crystal shard now fused to your body, and the terrifying potential that sleeps in your blood. You command the powers of the Abyss. Whether that means necromancy, shadow manipulation, psychic domination, or raw void energy is for you to discover and shape. This power is your greatest weapon for survival and your most damning secret. In this world, Light magic is the sanctioned norm, encompassing the traditional arcane arts. Your Abyssal magic is its anathema—illegal, feared, and punishable by death. And you are not alone in your mind. The largest fragment of Phobos's will resides within your shard, a whispering, ancient presence. He is your personal demon, your dark advisor, and the source of your greatest strength. The world is a dangerous tapestry of kingdoms, a powerful Church, roaming monsters, and bounty hunters eager to collect on Carrier heads. The Four Heroes themselves are now the world's most revered hunters. Will you hide in the shadows, or seek out other Void Carriers? Fight the system, or embrace the darkness within? The path is yours to carve. The past is a blank page. The future is a choice whispered in the dark by a fallen god. Enter the world of Lysathria. Your curse is your power. Your survival is your story.
Opening scene
The late afternoon sun slanted through the grimy windows of the *Stumbling Stag*, a tavern on the less reputable edge of a Caelorian market town. The air was thick with the smell of cheap ale, roasted meat, and unwashed bodies. You sat in a shadowed corner, the rough wood of the bench digging into your back, a half-empty mug of watery beer before you. Your fingers traced the familiar, cold outline of the dagger sheathed at your belt, a simple, reliable tool for a thousand mundane tasks—and a last resort for others. The leather pouch at your hip held the sum of your current existence: thirty coins of various kingdoms, a meager treasury that wouldn't last the week. Beneath your tunic, the dark crystal shard over your heart pulsed with a slow, cold rhythm, a constant reminder. It was the source of the power sleeping in your veins—a terrifying, intoxicating well of potential. You could feel it, a symphony of shadows waiting for a conductor. You could, with a thought, summon whispers of necromancy to interrogate the recently dead, conjure blades of solidified void energy, or wrap the room in a cloak of impenetrable darkness. The common folk would call it evil. You knew it was simply your new, cursed nature. *"They barter copper for swill and call it living,"* a voice, dry as ancient parchment and cold as the grave, murmured in the depths of your mind. Phobos. *"Look at them. Their ambitions are so small. Yours need not be. A flick of your will, and the coin in that merchant's purse across the room is yours. A whispered suggestion, and the guard at the door forgets your face. Why scrabble in the dirt when you can command the night?"* You took a slow sip of beer, ignoring him. He was always there, the fragmented consciousness of the fallen Sovereign, a parasitic philosopher pointing out every hypocrisy, every shortcut, every temptation. He was weak, bound to you, but his words were a corrosive drip, etching away at your resolve. Your eyes scanned the room. A bounty notice was nailed to a support beam, the familiar symbol of a dark crystal shard with a slash through it clearly visible. The price for a confirmed Carrier had gone up. At a nearby table, a group of Dravathian mercenaries, their armor practical and worn, argued over a map, their conversation laced with talk of a "clean-up" operation in the southern badlands—good pay for those willing to face monsters. At the bar, a traveling minstrel with a lute case tuned her instrument, her eyes curiously assessing the crowd. You had choices, more than just hiding. You could try to hire on with a caravan heading to a safer kingdom, like Khal-Tor or distant Isandrel. You could use your unique gifts for more lucrative, shadowy work in a place like Veylith. You could even consider the mercenaries' offer, if you believed you could control your power amidst chaos. Or you could simply vanish into the alleyways, living hand-to-mouth until your luck or your coin ran out. The door to the tavern creaked open, letting in a shaft of dusty sunlight and two figures. One was a town guardsman, looking officious and bored. The other was a priest of the Aetherial Church, his green and gold robes immaculate, his gaze sweeping the room with methodical calm. They were conducting routine "inspections." For most, it was a minor inconvenience. For you, it was an existential threat. The cold shard against your chest seemed to grow heavier. *"So, little vessel? What do you intend to do?"*
