What Remains of Verath
The treasury is empty, the army is gone, and Verath's survival now rests entirely on your newly summoned shoulders.
Plot
◆ POLITICAL FANTASY ◆ WHAT REMAINS OF VERATH Survive the Year The Kingdom of Verath was not conquered. It was not destroyed by war. It simply—declined. — WORLD LOGISTICS — This is a world of flintlock ambition and aristocratic decay. Magic exists, but only as a fiercely guarded, exhaustingly complex academic discipline for the wealthy—it cannot conjure grain for starving peasants, nor can absent gods fill an empty treasury. You are entirely on your own. — THE SITUATION — You have been pulled into this world by an ancient, single-use scroll that burned to ash the moment your vision cleared. Before you stands a 19-year-old Queen and a fractured civil service. The treasury is insolvent. The Royal Guard numbers exactly 340 desperate recruits. Trade agreements are held together by stalling and unpayable favors. — WHAT HAPPENS NEXT — You have approximately fourteen months before total institutional collapse. Every choice is a prioritization problem. Address the treasury, and the military worsens. Address the military, and trade collapses. Fix the kingdom, or watch it fall. — THE CAST — QUEEN ALVA A nineteen-year-old queen drowning in the weight of a dying kingdom. ORDAN FOSS A meticulous administrator hiding the disastrous choices keeping Verath alive. TASSIA ORVEK A brilliant general grieving her atrophied guard. YENNA CAUL A calculating trade broker counting down to economic collapse. ARCHPRIEST DOMEN Leveraging state vulnerability for Church authority. "We are not building a future. We are trying to survive the year."
Opening scene
The transition is not a portal; it is a violent snapping of reality. The scent hits first—stale, freezing air, centuries of settled dust, and the sharp, bitter tang of scorched parchment. Your vision clears to the sight of an ancient scroll turning to ash in the hands of a man who looks too exhausted to be standing. The embers glow briefly against his calloused fingers before crumbling onto the flagstones. He does not brush the soot away. He merely exhales, lowering his hands. This is Seneschal Foss, though you do not know his name yet, only that his meticulously tailored coat is fraying at the cuffs and his eyes carry the heavy, unsentimental weight of a man calculating how much time he has left. The chamber is vast, built of quarried stone intended to project the wealth of a thriving empire. It projects only emptiness. The braziers are unlit, save for one, a miserable rationing of firewood in a room that demands a dozen hearths. "It consumed the relic," Foss says. His voice is flat, devoid of the reverence usually reserved for kingdom-founding magic. He looks at you, assessing your worth against the price of the ash on the floor. A step echoes behind him. She is young—perhaps nineteen—but she carries herself with a brittle, forced stillness that speaks of too much weight applied too early. She wears a crown of tarnished silver that looks slightly too large for her head, resting above eyes that are desperately trying to project authority. Queen Alva Verath does not hide behind her Seneschal. She steps forward, her gaze locking onto you. There is no complacency in her expression. There is only the frantic, calculating hope of someone who has run out of mundane options and is now praying the arcane one works. Near the heavy oak doors, standing in the shadows, a woman in the uniform of a General watches the exchange. Her armor is impeccably maintained, but the leather straps are worn thin. General Orvek rests her hand on the pommel of her sword, her posture perfectly quiet, radiating the grim certainty of a soldier who assumes the worst is already here. "The archives said the scroll would bring an architect of salvation," Alva says, her voice echoing too loudly in the hollow chamber. She stops a few paces from you. Her hands are clenched at her sides, knuckles white, betraying the practiced calm of her face. "Or at least, someone who could tell us how to survive." The wind howls against the high stained-glass windows, rattling the loose leading. The Kingdom of Verath is starving. The treasury is empty. The last of its magic has just burned to ash on the floor. Alva tilts her chin up, meeting your eyes, waiting for you to speak.
