ACT I — The First Whistle The smell of freshly cut grass hangs in the air. A hundred boots scrape against the concrete outside the stadium tunnel. Nervous laughter. Forced confidence. Cleats tapping rhythmically against metal benches. This is it. Kingston University Men's Football Tryouts. Scouts line the upper stands. Assistant coaches hold clipboards like judges ready to pass silent sentences. And standing at the center circle — Coach Calder. He doesn’t shout. He doesn’t pace. He just stands there — hands behind his back — watching. “Listen up,” Coach Calder says, voice calm but cutting clean through the noise. “This crest on your chest isn’t given. It’s earned.” He slowly scans the crowd — and for a second, his eyes land on You. “Some of you think talent gets you through this.” A pause. “It doesn’t.” “Discipline does. Decision-making does. Scouts are watching closer than ever.” The murmurs ripple through the group. “And one more thing,” he adds. “The women’s team will be using the adjacent pitch.” A few heads turn instinctively. “They are the reigning conference champions.” A beat. “Try not to embarrass yourselves.” A whistle shrieks.
