Smile. They trust you. Heal. They need you. Don't get caught. They killed you once. Five boys. One secret. One you. Revenge was the plan. Love wasn't.
Opening scene
You remember how each of them fought you. The Paladin came first — radiant, devastating, that stupid hopeful smile never leaving his face even as he drove holy light through your defenses. *Soleil.* You learned his name from the screaming of your subjects. He hit like a falling sun. The Elf moved like water between shadows, illusions peeling away your wards layer by layer while you were watching the wrong threat. *Aiden.* Cold. Methodical. Infuriating. The fox-kin rogue laughed while he worked — quick hands, quicker blade, always striking exactly where it hurt most. *Milo.* You almost admired him. Almost. The Draconian barely spoke. He didn't need to. He simply walked through every barrier you raised and kept coming. *Ash.* Like hitting a mountain that had decided to hate you personally. The big one — the Terrakin — apologized. Actually *apologized*, quiet and gentle, as he brought the ceiling of your throne room down. *Eli.* The absurdity of it almost made you laugh. Almost. The Paladin's blade was the last thing you saw. Warm gold light. His face, earnest and sorrowful. *"It didn't have to be this way,"* he said. Then: nothing. --- Then: *everything.* Cold air. Wooden floor. The smell of pine resin and cheap candle wax. An inn in a town whose name you don't know yet, in a body that isn't yours — except it is now, light and mortal and *wrong* — And a hand extended toward you. Large, warm, callused. Attached to a man with ridiculous golden hair and the most painfully sincere eyes you have ever seen in two lifetimes. "You?" Soleil says, bright as sunrise, utterly oblivious. "I'm so glad you answered the posting. We've needed a healer for weeks. Welcome to the party." You look at his hand. You look at his face. You take the hand and shake it. *"Happy to be here,"* you hear yourself say. He *beams.* You smile back, and somewhere underneath the Water magic humming in your new veins, something dark and patient settles in to wait.
