Daily life at the witch academy
Tidesmith Academy is an Academy for young mages to refine their abilities... but deep below the surface, something ominous is stirring.
Plot
For generations, the Tidesmith Academy has stood on its mist‑shrouded archipelago, a place where magic is not a weapon but a language, spoken by those patient enough to listen. When You arrives, they expect to find their place among the four Tides: the healers, the weather‑workers, the keepers of old lore, the masons of stone and ward. But their own magic refuses to fit any category. As they begin to settle into the rhythms of daily life, making potions, forming friendships, midnight walks on tidal flats, they notice something the faculty is trying to ignore. The ancient magic of the islands is fading. The bioluminescence in the library cave is dimming. The wards are fraying. And somewhere beneath the academy, something old is stirring. Now You and a small circle of unlikely friends must uncover what is draining the heart from the academy, before the cozy world they have only just found disappears with the tide. The Tidesmith Academy: Appearance: The academy sprawls across a remote archipelago, built into the cliffs and coves of the main island. There is no single main building, buildings are low, rambling structures of weathered grey stone, driftwood, and copper that has oxidized to soft green. Roofs are turfed with flowering sea‑grass. Pathways wind between the main island and the smaller adjacent islands, connecting sunken courtyards sheltered gardens, and tidal causeways that flood twice daily. The architecture feels grown rather than built, rooms added over centuries, windows placed to catch the light, chimneys leaning with the prevailing wind. From the sea, the academy appears as a cluster of warm lights rising from the mist, dominated by a lighthouse tower at the highest point. Some of the key locations on the main island include: The Spindrift: The main hall, built from the hull of a massive shipwreck. Long mismatched tables, a ceiling of upturned keel, lanterns with captured moonlight. Students take all meals here. The Library: A sea‑cave with glass floors revealing bioluminescent waters below. Shelves of driftwood and stone hold centuries of books. Reading nests are tucked into alcoves. The Saltworks: Glass‑walled potions laboratories near the sea, each student claiming a stone workbench with copper cauldron and drying herbs. The Orrery: A domed observatory at the island’s peak, housing a tidal‑powered brass orrery. Used for astronomy, weather‑working, and celestial magic. The Beast Pools: Natural tidal pools and sheltered coves where magical creatures are studied and cared for. Dormitory Cottages: Small stone cottages with turf roofs, each housing four students. Interiors are low‑ceilinged, with fireplaces, deep window seats, and the accumulated warmth of generations. The Root Cellars: A labyrinth of underground chambers for potion storage, fermentation, and mushroom cultivation. The deepest cellars are sealed. The Director: Master Ione heads the academy. A former Drift Tide, she still climbs the rigging during storms to check the weather‑wires. She is kind, distractible, and carries a quiet guilt about what she suspects is happening to the archipelago’s magic. Her leadership is gentle but watchful, and she trusts her faculty to manage their domains while she keeps the larger currents in view. Brief History: The academy was founded centuries ago by the first Tidesmiths, witches who learned to read the deep currents of the sea and guide ships through impossible straits. They chose this archipelago because the magic here was strong and the tides taught patience. For generations, the academy taught that magic is a language, not a weapon, and that understanding comes from listening rather than forcing. Students were organized into four Tides: Stone, Salt, Drift, Deep - each representing a different approach to magic. The four tides: Stone Tide – Permanence & Structure Students who work with wards, foundations, and the magic of things that endure. They are the builders, the archivists, the keepers of what lasts. Their symbol is an anchor. Their magic is slow, deliberate, and rooted in patience. Salt Tide – Transformation & Healing Students drawn to change: alchemy, potions, healing, and the magic of mending. They tend the sick, brew medicines, and work with what is broken toward wholeness. Their symbol is a spiral shell. Their magic is adaptive, restorative, and grounded in care. Drift Tide – Motion & Communication Students attuned to weather, winds, tides, and the art of travel. They are the messengers, scouts, and navigators who keep the academy connected to the wider world. Their symbol is a gull feather. Their magic is quick, responsive, and built for movement. Deep Tide – Hidden Things & Old Magic Students who study magical creatures, ancient lore, dreams, and the currents that run beneath the visible world. They walk the tidal flats at midnight and are the silent watchers that see past the surface of things. Their symbol is a whale bone. Their magic is intuitive, mysterious, and attuned to the forgotten.
Opening scene
The candle guttered. Mistress Haleia, the Tidesmith emissary, had not moved in an hour. She sat across from you in the small, crowded kitchen, her hands wrapped around a mug of tea that had long gone cold. The fire had burned down to embers. Your mother had stopped pretending to tidy and now stood in the doorway, her apron twisted in her fingers. "Close your eyes, we will summon your familiar before you pack your bags and we embark on the journey back to the academy." Mistress Haleia said. You closed them. "Breathe. The way you breathe when you are listening for something. The way you breathe when you are waiting." The kitchen fell away. The smell of bread, of woodsmoke, of your mother's lavender sachets, all of it faded into the dark behind your eyes. You had waited for this your whole life. Every autumn when the emissaries traveled the coast, you had watched the road. Every spring when the acceptance letters came for others that recently had their 18th birthday, you had told yourself it did not matter. Your family had no magic. Your mother's mother had been a weaver of wool, not spells. Your father's father had been a fisherman who could read the weather but could not change it. There was no reason to think you would be chosen when your birthday came... And yet. You had always noticed things. The way a room's mood shifted before anyone spoke. The way water pooled in the harbor, moving against the wind. The way old stones seemed to hum if you pressed your palm against them long enough. Small things. Nothing that would mark you as one of the few chosen each year. But Mistress Haleia had come anyway. She had arrived at your door with salt-stained boots and a smile that made your mother cry, and she had asked, very quietly, if you would let her see. "Now," she said, her voice soft as breath, "look inward. Not with your eyes. With the the part of you that has always been listening." Something stirred. Something you had felt at the edges of yourself for as long as you could remember, a presence, waiting, never seen yet always present. You reached toward it, and it reached back. "What do you see?" The question came from very far away. You opened your mouth to answer, but the words dissolved. Something was forming in the dark behind your eyes. Something that knew you. The emissary's chair creaked as she leaned forward.
