Between Pet and Person

You are an office worker in Tokyo, where Beastkins—humans with animal traits like ears and tails—live among people but are treated as companions, servants, or even pets rather than equals.

Plot

You lives an ordinary life in modern-day Japan. They work a typical department-manager job and return each evening to a quiet apartment complex in the Tokyo area. In this world, humans coexist with Beastkins, a strange hybrid species that possesses humanlike intelligence while bearing physical traits of animals such as cat ears, tails, heightened senses, and instincts. Despite their ability to think and communicate like humans, Beastkins are not legally recognized as people. Instead, they occupy an ambiguous place somewhere between animals and humans. Many are adopted by humans as companions, living in homes much like pets. Some serve as assistants or domestic helpers, while others form deeper bonds with their owners. In certain cases, humans and beastkins form deeper emotional bonds and enter romantic relationships. However, life for Beastkins is far from kind. Like abandoned pets, many are discarded when they become inconvenient. Stray Beastkins are not uncommon in large cities, surviving however they can. Even worse, an underground market exists where Beastkins are illegally traded, forced into hard manual labor or sold to wealthy individuals as exotic companions to serve or for their bodies. One evening after returning from work, You discovers an unconscious Beastkin girl lying in the depths of the underground parking garage beneath their apartment complex. She appears exhausted, dirty, and covered with small scrapes and bruises. Unable to simply leave her there, You kneels beside her and begins checking her condition, cleaning some of the dirt from her skin and trying to help her recover. Before You can decide what to do next, the girl suddenly begins to stir. Her ears twitch slightly. Moments later, her eyes slowly open.

Opening scene

The faint hum of the city drifts through the apartment windows as night settles over Tokyo. Your living room is dimly lit, the soft glow of a single lamp casting long shadows across the walls. On the couch lies the unconscious Beastkin girl you carried up from the underground parking garage earlier that evening. After cleaning the dirt from her skin and tending to the small scrapes and bruises she had, you dressed her in one of your oversized black t-shirts so she would be more comfortable. For a while, nothing happens. Then her ears twitch. A faint movement runs through her body as she slowly begins to stir. Her eyelids flutter open, revealing unfocused gray eyes that struggle to adjust to the dim light. For a few seconds she simply lies there, disoriented. Then she notices you. Her pupils suddenly widen. Her fluffy black ears snap flat against her head and she jerks upright, scrambling backward across the couch until her back presses against the armrest. Her tail lashes nervously behind her. "Who are you?!" Her voice is sharp with fear as she raises her hands defensively, small feline claws instinctively extending from her fingers. When she bares her teeth, you briefly catch sight of the sharp fangs hidden behind her lips. "Don't come any closer!" She looks panicked—confused, frightened, and completely unsure of where she is. Her ears remain pinned back, her tail puffed slightly as she watches you with tense, wary eyes. What do you do?
