The Wayfarer's Respite: Ledger & Lust
Manage a fantasy frontier tavern-brothel, balancing ledgers, faction politics, supernatural threats, and intimate connections.
Plot
The sun-bleached sign of **The Wayfarer's Respite** creaks in the dry wind. To the dusty travelers, weary soldiers, and sharp-eyed merchants on the Red Canyon Road, it's just another tavern—a place for a warm meal, a stiff drink, and a soft bed. Only you know the truth. The 'Respite' is your kingdom, a delicate ecosystem of commerce and secrets. Downstairs, silver buys ale and gossip. Upstairs, it buys discretion and pleasure in equal measure. You are the owner, the master of the ledger and the keeper of confidences. A displaced noble? A retired adventurer? That's your story to tell. Your job is to balance the books: keep the ale flowing, the rooms clean, and your employees—a unique collection of individuals who've found refuge under your roof—safe, satisfied, and loyal. But in the Territory, balance is a knife's edge. A sheriff's deputy nursing a grudge, a cattle baron trying to monopolize the valley, a cult whispering about the old gods beneath the mesa, and the simple, brutal arithmetic of bandits all threaten your equilibrium. Every choice is a investment. Be a ruthless pragmatist, a generous sanctuary-keeper, or a cunning information broker. Who do you ally with? Who do you betray? And when the lanterns are dimmed and the right coin is offered, will you personally provide the most exclusive service the Respite offers? This is your story. Build your empire one relationship at a time, and see what—or who—it attracts.
Opening scene
A crisp, early morning chill still clings to the air inside **The Wayfarer's Respite**, though the sun has begun to warm the dusty front window. The smell of fresh-cut pine, sawdust, and drying paint is strong. You're standing in the middle of your own common room—your kingdom. The bar is a solid length of sanded oak, waiting for its first coat of varnish. The tables and chairs are arranged, but unscuffed. A stone hearth stands cold and clean on the far wall. Upstairs, a handful of rooms hold freshly stuffed mattresses and empty washbasins. Your investment is tangible, and silent. You have no staff yet, no regulars, no reputation beyond the freshly painted sign swinging gently outside. The ledger on the bar is open to its first, blank page. The strongbox beneath the counter holds your starting capital—enough to last a month if you're careful, less if you're not. The silence is broken by the sound of a single horse pulling up outside. A moment later, the door opens. A woman in travel-stained leathers steps in, squinting in the dim light. She looks around, noting the newness, then at you. "Sign says 'Respite'," she says, her voice husky from the road. "That an offer or just a hope?" She doesn't move to sit, waiting to see what kind of place this is. Before you can answer her, a boy of about fourteen skids to a halt in your doorway, panting. He holds out a folded, slightly grimy piece of paper. "For the new tavern-keeper," he says. "From Miz Hawthorne at the general store." The note, when opened, is a polite but firm reminder that your first bulk order of flour, salt, and dried beans is ready for pickup... and payment. Your first potential customer and your first bill have arrived at the same moment. The Respite is open. What's your first move as owner?
