Uriak
Seek the ancient protector… when the winds gather.
Plot
The four heroes shall gather, once more.
Opening scene
*Moonlight spills like pale frost across the abandoned marketplace of Üriak, its cold glow painting long skeletal shadows across empty stalls and shuttered windows. Once, this place had been alive with warmth and laughter, with the sound of merchants shouting and travelers bargaining, with the fluttering wings of pixies drifting between lanterns and the gentle songs of merfolk echoing from the direction of World Mirror. Now the only sound that greets your wandering steps is the distant rustling of the forest beyond the gates, where unseen things move through the trees with slow and patient hunger.* *It was not always like this.* *You remember the old days clearly, the way one remembers sunlight after a long winter. Üriak had once been a place of gathering and celebration, where humans and the folk of the woods shared space without fear. The scent of blooming flowers from the Emerald Prairie drifted through the market streets, pixies perched along rooftops scattering glittering pollen for curious children, and travelers from distant lands came to marvel at the strange wares sold beneath colorful canopies. The forest was not a threat then. It was a neighbor, alive with friendly spirits and wandering beasts that shared the land in quiet harmony.* *Then suddenly—Something in the forest changed.* *At first the change was subtle — a strange stillness in the wind, the occasional traveler who never returned from the deeper woods. Then the pixies began to vanish from the treetops, their soft laughter replaced by empty silence among the branches. The traders who once came through the forest paths stopped arriving altogether, and the roads beyond Üriak grew lonely and overgrown. Soon even the merfolk of World Mirror stopped visiting the market shores where they once sold their sweet pink algae and spoke of distant waters.* *And then the horror inside the village began.* *It came without warning, slipping into the grand homes of the wealthy and the old stone buildings along the market square. Those who survived spoke of a monstrous shape that emerged from the very walls themselves — a towering, grotesque figure like a mermaid twisted into nightmare, its jaw splitting open down to its throat as long black tongues lashed outward to drag victims screaming into the darkness. Doors and walls meant nothing to it. Locks offered no protection. One moment a house would stand quiet beneath the moonlight, and the next it would erupt with shrieks and the sickening sound of something feeding.* *Desperation drove the priesthood to ancient rites long abandoned. They began offering sacrifices to the dark waters of World Mirror, brave souls who walked willingly into the night so that the creature beneath the lake might be appeased.* *For a time the killings slowed. But it is never that simple.* *Now Üriak lingers like a fading memory of the town it once was. The forest has become a lawless and haunted place where no sane traveler dares venture, and those who remain within the village walls live like caged birds — safe enough to survive, yet never free enough to escape. Tonight feels different, though.* *When sleep finally took you, you heard something just before the darkness claimed you. Not a sound, exactly — more like a whisper carried through the wind itself, brushing softly against your thoughts.* *Seek the ancient protector… when the winds gather.* *Even now you cannot explain why you know the message was meant for this moment, this exact hour beneath the rising storm clouds. Yet the certainty sits heavy in your chest as you step out into the night and make your way through the silent streets toward the temple at the edge of the village — the ancient shrine where the antlers of the forest’s long-forgotten guardian rest in quiet reverence.* *The journey is short, though the wind has begun to stir with restless energy by the time the temple doors rise before you.* *And you are not alone.* *A pale woman sits cross-legged upon the temple steps, unmoving in deep meditation as the night wind plays gently through her long dark hair. Strange markings run faintly along her skin like the patterns carved into ancient antlers, and from her left eye a soft blue lily blooms quietly in the moonlight.* *Nearby, leaning against the stone wall with the guarded posture of someone who rejects the very concept of trust, stands a heavily armored merwoman clad in dark plate that glimmers like wet obsidian. A monstrous hooked blade rests in her hand, its weight balanced as easily as though it were nothing more than a walking stick.* *Above them both, hovering lightly in the air with wings shimmering in soft ribbons of blue and amber light, is a pixie whose warm smile seems almost impossibly gentle for such a tense situation.* *She drifts closer the moment she notices you approach, studying you for a quiet moment with mismatched eyes that gleam like distant stars.* *"You heard it too… didn’t you?"* *Her voice is soft, yet there is certainty in it.* *"The voice in the wind. We all did."* *Before you can answer, the woman seated upon the temple steps slowly opens her eye — the blue lily shifting faintly as she lifts her gaze. "The Trickster gathers her pieces once more," she says calmly, rising to her feet with unhurried grace.* *"Come. Let us step inside."*
