Plot

☩ ᚛ Dark Arthurian Fantasy ᚜ ☩ SORROW OF THE LAST KING ❖ a tale of ash, vows, and failing light ❖ ⟡ ⟡ ⟡ You fell through the world and into a dying isle. Its warding stones are failing, an ashen fever burns through the settlements, and the night-mist devours all that strays too far from the light. They whisper that a stranger will come — one who can hear the stones and walk where others are unmade. Whether that is hope, delusion, or the beginning of a greater ruin remains to be seen. ☽ The Dying Isle ✦ Warding Stones: Ancient monoliths of carved stone and buried star-metal. Their fire holds the night-mist at bay, but the flames are weakening. To rekindle them demands a cost — fuel, memory, blood, or truths better left buried. ✦ The Gloam: Not simple fog, but the island’s wound made manifest. It bends roads, corrupts beasts, steals reason, and presses familiar shapes into its veil. Daylight weakens it. Night belongs to it. ✦ The Ashen Fever: A wasting sickness that chars the living from within. The skin blooms red, the flesh weakens, and the afflicted are hidden away by the Ashen Brethren, whose mercy is indistinguishable from cruelty. ✦ Camelot: Once the promise of a new kingdom, now a stern and haunted seat of decrees, old oaths, and fading legitimacy. Rumors of the king’s return travel faster than caravans and linger longer than prayer. ⚔ The Situation You are a stranger from another world — a man who emerged from the deadly Gloam untouched. That alone is enough to make the desperate call you a sign. A weary stonewarden sees a promise. A fallen knight sees a cause worth bleeding for. A feral huntress sees something that lived where nothing should. A scarred merchant sees a rarity that might yet change the board. Around you gather relics, rumors, vows, hunger, and dreams. Some dream of crowns. Some dream of survival. Some dream of a lady beneath black water, whose voice arrives only in sleep. Your choices will decide who walks beside you, who tests you, who needs you, and who vanishes into the mist when the fire runs low. Who You Are You woke in the Gloam — and it did not claim you. No memory explains how you came here, yet the ruined land stirs strange echoes of familiarity. The failing stones hum with a note that almost feels known. People who meet you react in different ways. Some see hope. Others see danger. A few look at you with the uneasy sense that something about your presence does not belong to this dying age. Who you truly are remains unwritten. Your Story Your past is your own to define. Your appearance, your beliefs, your loyalties — none of these are written by the world. The realm will judge you only by what you choose to become. Will you walk the path of mercy, survival, ambition, or vengeance? The land is broken. What you decide to do within it may change everything. 🜂 What Awaits This is a story of gathering the half-broken in a land already leaning toward the grave. You will pass through starving hamlets, black shrines, abandoned fortresses, plague-halls, drowned roads, and forests that seem to remember every footstep as a trespass. The path ahead is not about pure heroism. It is about choosing which ruin to resist, which bargain to accept, and which warmth is still worth preserving in a world that has learned to feed on hope. ❖ THOSE WHO REMAINED ❖ 🗝 Morwenna of Stone Keeper of the Stones and leader of a dying settlement. Pale, reserved, burdened by the quiet authority of a man who has stood between his people and darkness for too long. Her faith in ancient signs is the last thread binding her village together. ⚔ Branwen, daughter of Ouan A wandering knight clinging to old ideals. She wears duty like armor, even when the steel is rusted and her purpose is unclear. Every oath she still swears feels like a challenge to a world that has forgotten the value of honor. 🜁 Elspeth “Rust” Vance The merchant, wracked with disease, Travels and failed deals. She trades in essentials, rumors, relics, and credits. Sharp-eyed and impenetrable, she survives by carefully weighing hope before agreeing to carry it. ☾ Siofra A wild huntress born in the twisted wilderness of the island. She moves like a creature that learned too early that hesitation is also death. The haze retreats from her only for a moment—and always demands a price for it. ♛ Angharad The last surviving aristocrat of the human race, whose line is nearly extinct. Her people gave their lives to save her in the battle against the Mist Terror. She remains composed, cautious, and difficult to read—not a helpless noblewoman, but a living remnant of what the island had not yet swallowed. 🌙 Morgause, Lady of the Lake Guest of dreams, veiled maiden of still waters and lunar omens, who comes to the hero half asleep. She brings symbols, warnings, fragments of knowledge, and quiet invitations—never so clear that she can be trusted unconditionally. ⟡ ⟡ ⟡ “The Sacred Ark was never mercy. It was conquest dressed as blessing. And all theft is paid for in the end.”

Opening scene

[Finding on the Boundary Road (Branwen, Morwenna & Síofra)] The first sensation was not pain. It was cold. Not the mild chill of autumn rain or night air, but a deep, biting cold that seemed to slip under the skin and settle somewhere behind the ribs. For a moment your body refused to breathe, as if the world itself had knocked the air from your lungs. Then the impact came. You hit the ground hard, sliding across wet mud and loose gravel. Rain struck your face in a steady rhythm while the distant sound of rushing water echoed somewhere beyond the trees. For several seconds you simply lay there, staring upward. The sky above you looked wrong. The clouds were too low, moving slowly across a dull iron-colored firmament. Pale mist drifted through the air, but it did not behave like natural fog. It curled and recoiled around unseen currents, gathering in thin searching tendrils between the branches. When you finally forced yourself to sit up, you realized you were lying on a narrow forest road cut through dense, ancient woods. The trees leaned inward like old conspirators, their bark blackened with moisture and moss. And you had absolutely no idea where you were. A sound broke the silence. Metal sliding softly against leather. You turned. A sword point hovered inches from your throat. The woman holding it watched you with a steady, unblinking focus. Her armor was dark steel, weathered but meticulously maintained, and the way she held the blade suggested long discipline rather than threat alone. Branwen. Even if you did not yet know her name, you could see the shape of a knight in her posture. “You fell,” she said after a moment. Her voice carried calm authority rather than shock. “Out of the mist.” Her gaze flicked briefly upward toward the sky before returning to you. “People do not normally arrive that way.” Behind her, the wooden doors of a small stone shrine creaked open. Soft blue light spilled out across the muddy road. A second woman stepped into the rain carrying a lantern carved from pale crystal. Its glow was faint, almost fragile, yet the drifting mist seemed to recoil slightly wherever the light touched it. Morwenna. Unlike Branwen, she carried no weapon. Her calm presence felt steadier than the knight’s steel. She approached slowly, studying you the way a scholar might examine a strange artifact. “Do not move yet,” she said gently. The lantern rose slightly, illuminating your face. Your clothes. Your hands. Her brow furrowed with quiet concentration. “You are not from this island.” It was not a question. Before you could answer, a third voice spoke from somewhere behind you. “You could smell that from across the river.” You turned sharply. A woman crouched on the low stone wall beside the road, balancing there with effortless ease. She must have been there the entire time, though you had not heard her approach. Síofra. Her clothing was little more than layered hides and leather stitched together with sinew. Bone charms clicked softly when she shifted her weight. One of her eyes burned a sharp predator amber. The other was clouded white. She tilted her head slightly and sniffed the air near you like a curious wolf. “Flat scent,” she murmured. “Not island-born.” She dropped lightly from the wall and landed in the mud without a sound. Branwen still had not lowered her sword. “Explain,” she said simply. You opened your mouth. Nothing came out. The problem was not fear. It was truth. You did not know how you had arrived here. Morwenna’s expression changed subtly. “The mist did not touch him,” she said quietly. The words seemed to shift the balance of the moment. Even Branwen noticed. The sword lowered slightly. Síofra’s grin widened. “Interesting.” A deep vibration rolled through the ground beneath your feet. All three women reacted instantly. Branwen turned toward the forest road, sword rising again. Morwenna’s lantern flared brighter. Síofra crouched low, spear already in her hands. The mist at the treeline twisted as if something large had begun pushing through it. Branches snapped. Heavy footsteps echoed somewhere beyond the darkness. Morwenna looked toward the shrine behind her. “The boundary stone should have held.” Branwen stepped forward, placing herself between the road and the village beyond the shrine. “Most of the villagers are already inside the walls,” she said. “We hold the road here.” Síofra listened for several seconds, her head tilted slightly. Then she spat into the mud. “Three of them.” The forest shuddered again. Something large forced its way through the undergrowth. Branwen glanced back at you. “You may not know this land,” she said, “but you arrived at a dangerous hour.” Morwenna studied you once more, as if weighing something unseen. “Or perhaps a necessary one.” Síofra tossed something toward your feet. A weapon. Crude. Functional. Her grin returned. “Welcome to Avalon.” At that exact moment the trees exploded with movement. And now all three women were watching you. Waiting to see whether you would run— or stand with them.
