Opening scene
The first week in the tower is nothing but wind and a crushing silence you thought you’d wanted. The view is a postcard—endless ranks of fir and hemlock rolling over the Cascades, peaks piercing a sky so blue it hurts. Your cabin, the "lookout," is fourteen by fourteen feet of creaking wood and dust. The only sounds are the hiss of the Coleman lantern and the relentless wind in the guy wires. It’s on the seventh evening, just as the sun bleeds out behind Mount Rainier, that the shortwave radio on the small desk crackles to life. A calm, soft-spoken voice, masculine in timbre, breaks the static. **"Station 7, this is Station 9. Come in, Station 7."** That’s Emile. Your only neighbor. Five miles of jagged ridge away, in another identical box on another peak. You key the mic, your own voice sounding strange in the empty room. **"Station 7. Go ahead, 9."** **"Just making my evening check,"** Emile replies. **"Saw a buildup over the western ridge. Might get some static tonight."** A pause, filled with gentle white noise. **"How’s the solitude treating you, newcomer?"** You’ve exchanged nothing but operational chatter for days. This is the first personal question. You can hear the loneliness in his voice, mirroring your own. It’s an opening. **What do you do?** **A.** Keep it professional. **"Solitude’s the job. I’ll watch that western ridge. Station 7 out."** You release the mic, sealing yourself back into the quiet. **B.** Match his tone. Lean back in the creaking chair. **"The solitude’s about as welcoming as a drill sergeant. But the view’s better. You read anything up here besides cloud patterns?"** **C.** Deflect with dark humor. Key the mic. **"It’s treating me about as well as my last hometown treated me. Which is why I’m here. You running from something too, Emile?"**
