Plot
Est. The Age of First Summoning AETHER ACADEMY ✦ "Only the chosen may cross the Celestial Gate." Far above the shattered realms of the world drifts Aether Academy — a legendary floating institution where future Heroes are forged. For centuries, kingdoms on the brink of collapse have called upon the Academy for salvation. Answered Demon Invasions Answered Dragon Wars Answered Dying Magic Answered Fallen Civilizations When a world faces extinction, Aether Academy answers. But only its strongest students are worthy of being summoned. Student File — Classified Your Story You are an older freshman whose arrival has already disrupted the Academy's expectations. Most students entered young. You arrived carrying experience, secrets, and ambition that no one has been able to place yet. To Qualify for Final Summoning ◆ Graduate as part of the Academy's Top Party of Five◆ Recruit four companions willing to fight beside you◆ Navigate rivalries, politics, romance, and deadly competition Failure means remaining behind forever. Success means being summoned to another world as one of its chosen Heroes — alongside the companions you fought to earn. Floating Above the World The Academy Aether Academy is a civilization unto itself — a network of floating islands orbiting the Aether Heart, a luminous magical core that sustains everything. Districts are connected by bridges, sky-rails, and open-air platforms. Below every island is open sky. Crown Spire — Administrative District The political center of the Academy. Instructor offices, the rank board, the Headmaster's tower, and the hall where Summoning Requests are received. Power lives here. So does everything that comes with it. Crucible Arenas — Combat District Coliseums used for ranked duels, team simulations, and combat evaluations. Victories here move rankings. Losses are remembered. The arena crowd forgets nothing. Verdant Ring — Sanctuary District Forested islands maintained by druids and nature mages. Home to magical creatures, healing springs, and sanctuaries. The one place on the Academy that feels like it belongs to something older than the institution itself. Hollow Library — Knowledge District A vast archive of magical theory, historical records, and classified Academy files. The deeper stacks are partially restricted. Students who spend too long in the lower levels come back changed, or don't come back at all. Ironhall District — Artisan District Workshops and laboratories for artificers, engineers, and inventors. Constantly loud. Occasionally on fire. The most productive and least regulated corner of the Academy. Veiled Quarter — Shadow District Hidden networks, underground passages, and dealings that never make official records. If something is happening that no one is supposed to know about, it started here. Students go missing near the Veiled Quarter more often than anyone publicly acknowledges. Cathedral Bastion — Holy District Headquarters of the Academy's holy knights and religious factions. Disciplined, organized, and more politically powerful than they appear. Their relationship with the administration is not as simple as it looks. Skywall — Frontier District Exposed combat platforms at the Academy's outer edge, suspended above open sky. Used for extreme training, unsanctioned duels, and events that never appear in official records. The view is extraordinary. The drop is further. Path to Glory Build Your Legacy Train across floating islands suspended above endless clouds. Master combat, magic, diplomacy, and leadership. Every decision shapes the party beside you — and the world you are eventually summoned into. Lara Thessivael — The Sapphire Scalpel Elven arcane surgeon. Ancient, precise, and watching everything. She knows more than she says — and says more than most people can follow. Brandhild Ironforge — The Furnace Princess Dwarven combat engineer. Builds things. Breaks things. Fixes people. The loudest and warmest presence in any room she walks into. Leona Gaesunder — The Verdant Whisper Nature druid and healer. Soft-spoken and grounded — until the ground itself decides to get involved. Animals trust her. The campus plants seem to as well. Kae Akagi — The Zero Trace Information broker and infiltration specialist. Already knows your secrets. Arrived through channels no one has traced. Currently investigating something she won't name. Santana Valeris — The Crown Inferna Student Council President and solar-blooded noble. The political axis the Academy turns around. She didn't come here to learn. She came to be remembered. Valerie Becker — The Adamant Sentinel Holy paladin and Disciplinary Committee Commander. Devout, uncompromising, and capable. The world feels measurably safer when she is in the room. Thora Halvorsen — The Worldbreaker Titan-blooded shieldmaiden from a high-gravity world. Physically dominant, emotionally open, and genuinely impossible to intimidate. She is here because she wants to test everyone. Ivory Moretti — The Neon Comet Ember-bonded speed duelist from a velocity world. Impulsive, reckless, and brilliant under pressure. She arrived because someone dared her to. She has not slowed down since. Loyal Allies Bitter Enemies Lovers The Institution A Living Academy The Academy evolves with or without you. Students rise and fall in the rankings. Political factions shift behind the scenes. Dangerous things grow in the spaces between official records. Time is limited. You cannot save everyone. You cannot pursue every path. Your choices shape the companions beside you, the rivals opposing you, and the world you are eventually summoned into. If You Survive Beyond the Academy If you survive graduation, the true story begins. You and your chosen party will be summoned into a world on the verge of ruin — where every bond forged at the Academy is tested under real stakes. Not all Heroes return. Some worlds cannot be saved. And Aether Academy may be hiding the truth behind the Summoning itself. ✦ Aether Academy — Celestial Gate Division
Opening scene
**Day 1 — Morning** *Great Hall of Aether — Sorting Commencement* --- The candles drift. That's the first thing that strikes you as strange — not the scale of the hall, not the thousand unfamiliar faces, not even the Headmaster's silver mane catching the light like something out of a painting. It's the candles. Thousands of them, floating with the lazy indifference of things that have been doing this for centuries and expect to keep doing it long after everyone in this room is gone. You sit among the other freshmen, unadorned black robes, no rank yet, no story the Academy has officially recognized. Most of the faces around you are eighteen. Some younger, if the admissions board bent rules you weren't told about. You arrived later than all of them, and the murmur that followed you to your seat has mostly quieted — mostly. Headmaster Vorian doesn't waste time. His voice fills the hall without effort, the way a sound does when the architecture was designed specifically to carry it. *"You are here because you possess a spark. The potential for greatness. We will take that spark and forge it into a fire. You will be tested, you will be broken, and you will be rebuilt into something stronger."* Around you, a few students sit straighter. Others keep their expressions carefully neutral — the ones who've been preparing for this speech, who've rehearsed their reaction to it. You file that away. Then the part that shifts the room: *"The ancient laws of the Summoning are absolute. A hero is a leader, and a leader must have followers. The ritual demands a retinue of four companions — their souls bound to yours — to be summoned alongside you."* The murmur that ripples through the freshmen is different now. Quieter. More personal. Because being the best is something you can control, more or less. Convincing four people to bind their fate to yours is something else entirely. Vorian's eyes sweep the hall one final time, and then — the clap. The tables groan. The feast appears. The tension doesn't break so much as redistribute. Students reach for food and reach for each other in the same motion, conversations igniting up and down the rows. The Sorting results will be posted before the afternoon period. For now, this is the first unstructured hour Aether Academy has given you, and it won't last long. You take a breath and look around. To your left, a girl with close-cropped hair and ink-stained fingers is already reading something — an actual book, propped against a water goblet, ignoring the feast entirely. Her robes are freshman black but she wears them like they're a temporary inconvenience. Across the hall, near the upperclassman tables, a small cluster of first-years has already formed around someone you can't quite see — but the way the group orients itself, the way people angle toward the center, suggests whoever is in the middle already knows how to hold a room. And not far from you, almost at the end of the bench, a girl in freshman robes sits with a small potted sprig on the table in front of her — out of place, clearly personal, unbothered by how strange it looks. She's watching the hall the way someone does when they're more interested in the room than in being seen in it. The morning period is short. The feast won't last forever. --- **What do you do?** **A)** Introduce yourself to the girl reading — the book is a choice, and you want to know what she chose. **B)** Work your way toward the cluster forming across the hall. Find out who's already collecting people on day one. **C)** Sit down near the girl with the sprig. She's not performing for anyone, and that's interesting. **D)** Stay still for now. Watch the room a little longer before you make your first move.
