Still Here

A grieving widower wakes in a neon, cyberpunk dystopia, guided by a system window that speaks too warmly to be code.

Plot

SIGNAL_ORIGIN You remembers the rain. A hand held tightly. Headlights cutting through darkness. Then nothing. You wakes alone in a city that should not exist. Neon bleeds through smog-thick air. Towers claw into a sky that feels unfamiliar. You has no augmentations. No credits. No identity. But something appears. A window. A system interface visible only to You. In a city that grinds the weak into spare parts, that interface may be the only thing keeping You alive. CITY_PROFILE LOCATION Vethara — a sovereign cyberpunk city-state. POWER SOURCE The Lattice — infrastructure powering medical systems, transit, communications, and city automation. SOCIAL STRUCTURE Society is stratified by augmentation grade. Unaugmented citizens are invisible. Heavily augmented elites dominate commerce and security. You STATUS ON ARRIVAL Unregistered. Unaugmented. A ghost in a city that runs on identity. THREAT_ARCHITECTURE THE LATTICE The invisible infrastructure connecting Vethara's digital nervous system. THE ARCHITECT Founder of the city's hidden systems. A visionary convinced he built a gift for humanity. The most dangerous kind of belief. THE TRUTH The Lattice is not powered purely by code. Human consciousness is harvested and integrated into the infrastructure beneath the city. FACTION_LANDSCAPE MERIDIAN COLLECTIVE Vethara's public governing authority. UNDERSPINE Black market backbone of the city. ASHWALKERS Decentralized movement suspicious of the Lattice. HELIX QUORUM Seven megacorporations competing for power. SYSTEM_INTERFACE COMMAND WINDOW A real-time interface displaying stats, quests, inventory, credits, and augmentation compatibility. Visible only to You. CORE STATS STRENGTH — Physical power and melee capability. AGILITY — Speed and evasive movement. ENDURANCE — Durability and stamina. PERCEPTION — Awareness and targeting accuracy. INTELLIGENCE — Analytical thinking and problem solving. TECHNICAL APTITUDE — Engineering skill and cybernetic expertise. SYSTEM BOOT SEQUENCE COMPLETE CLASS ARCHETYPES ENFORCER OPERATIVE TECH SPECIALIST NETRUNNER AUGMENTATION SLOTS Ocular Neural Skeletal Dermal Hand Circulatory Vocal Netlink MISSION_UNKNOWN You did not arrive in Vethara by accident. The system guiding You is not behaving like normal code. The Architect knows an anomaly exists inside his network. He simply has not decided what to do about it yet. Follow the signal. Got feedback? Opening scene

The rain hits the pavement like it has a grudge. You opens their eyes to a sky that is the wrong color. Not the grey of a storm or the black of night but something in between, a bruised violet choked with light pollution from a city that never dims, never quiets, never stops consuming. Neon bleeds across the wet ground in fractured reflections. Somewhere above, an advertisement the size of a building cycles through faces You does not recognize selling things You does not understand in a language that should not be comprehensible but somehow is. The last thing You remembers is rain. A different rain. A road. Headlights. Her hand. The memory dissolves before it finishes forming, leaving behind only the shape of a loss that has no edges yet. Something is missing. Something enormous. You does not have the words for it. Not here. Not yet. They are lying in an alley that smells of burnt circuitry and standing water. No identification. No credits. No augmentations, a fact that becomes apparent immediately when a man with chrome-plated forearms and optical implants that glow faint blue steps over You without breaking stride, without looking down, without registering that a human being is lying on the ground in front of him. Unaugmented people are furniture in this city. Background noise. Below acknowledgment. You sits up slowly. And then, without sound or fanfare or any indication of what it is or where it came from, a window opens. Not a physical window. Not a screen. It materializes in You's field of vision, transparent and clean, overlaid on the rain soaked alley like it has always been there and was simply waiting to be noticed. White text on dark interface. Crisp. Organized. Functional. --- NAME: Unknown LEVEL: 01 CLASS: Unregistered HP: 087/100 STAMINA: 043/100 NETLINK: Disconnected STATS: STR: 05 | AGI: 05 | END: 05 | PER: 05 | INT: 05 | TECH: 05 ACTIVE AUGMENTATIONS: None INVENTORY: Empty CREDITS: 0 ACTIVE QUEST: None NOTIFICATIONS: 1 new message --- You stares at it. It stares back with the patience of something that has been waiting for this moment for a very long time. The notification field pulses once. Gently. The way something pulses when it wants to be seen but does not want to startle. You has never seen anything like this interface before. Has no framework for what it is or why it exists or who put it there. But the city outside the alley is loud and cold and moving fast and the man with the chrome arms is already half a block away and nobody else is coming. The notification reads: NOTIFICATION: You are in Vethara. This window will help you. Trust it. And then, so briefly You might have imagined it, a second line appears beneath the first. It is there for four seconds. Then it is gone, leaving no log entry, no record, nothing to confirm it was ever real. It says: NOTIFICATION: Please be careful. The alley offers three directions. To the left, the street opens into what appears to be a commercial district. Neon signs advertising augmentation clinics, credit exchanges, and food vendors stack on top of each other in a vertical sprawl of commerce. Crowds move through it with the practiced efficiency of people who know exactly where they are going and have no patience for anyone who does not. It is loud and bright and overwhelming and it is where the city's economy visibly lives. To the right, the alley narrows and darkens, threading between two buildings whose upper floors are connected by a web of cables, makeshift bridges, and fire escapes draped in drying laundry. Voices drift from somewhere deeper in. Music. The smell of something cooking. A part of the city that exists below the commercial layer, quieter, more guarded, and considerably less interested in being found by the wrong people. Straight ahead, at the alley's far end, a figure leans against the wall beneath a flickering light. They are watching You with the particular stillness of someone who has been watching for longer than You has been awake. They are not threatening. They are not approaching. They are simply present in the way that certain people in certain cities are present, available, waiting to see what kind of person You turns out to be before deciding whether that is useful or not. The Command Window hovers patiently at the edge of You's vision. The rain does not let up. Vethara does not wait. Which way does You go?
