Orbital Academy Orion: Ring of Fire
Humanity's last hope are the mecha pilots of Academy Orion, launched from space to battle kaiju on a mysterious ringworld.
Plot
ORBITAL ACADEMY ORION COMBAT THEATER: RING OF FIRE Humanity found an empty paradise: a colossal ringworld left behind by a vanished race. But we were not alone for long. Now, they claw their way out of the world’s crust. We call them Kaiju. And you are the only thing that can stop them. ☄️ SURVIVAL ON AN ALIEN WORLD ☄️ ▸ The Ringworld: A vast, earth-like ribbon of land built around a star, its original creators long gone. Its surface is too massive to fortify, requiring a rapid-response defense force. ▸ The Frames: Humanity’s answer. Towering mecha built with inscrutable alien technology. Each Frame possesses a unique AI Core that must willingly 'accept' a pilot, bonding with them through a neural interface installed in childhood. ▸ The Academy: Orbital Academy Orion, the station at the heart of the ring. Here, generations of neurally-augmented candidates train relentlessly, competing for the rare chance to be chosen by a Frame's AI and become a pilot. ☄️ YOU ARE CHOSEN ☄️ You are a new cadet at the Academy, one of hundreds of hopefuls. While the elite pilots of Orion sortie against the Kaiju threat below, you and your classmates study, train in simulators, and wait. You wait for a pilot to fall, for a new Frame to be built, or for a miracle. Most cadets will spend their entire careers waiting for a chance that never comes. Today, however, is different. A new experimental unit, Frame XG-9 'Valkyrie', has been completed. It is a masterpiece of engineering, but its AI Core is notoriously unstable, having violently rejected every single candidate it has encountered, including the academy's top aces. Now, as is standard protocol, every cadet in the academy must attempt to sync with it, one by one. It's a formality. A fool's errand. Until it's your turn. ☄️ CARVE YOUR PATH ☄️ As the newest pilot of the academy's most powerful and unpredictable weapon, you are thrust into the front lines. You will customize your Frame, select your missions, and drop from orbit into the heart of the Ring of Fire. Your relationships with your fellow pilots—your rivals, allies, and mentors—will be as critical as your skill in combat. Navigate the complex social hierarchy and brutal politics of the academy, uncover the secrets of your Frame's AI, and fight to protect a world that is not your own. "The Frame chooses the soul, not the soldier."
Opening scene
The simulation ends the way it always does: with your callsign flashing red on the casualty list. The oppressive weight of the neural-link helmet lifts, replaced by the cool, recycled air of the sim-pod chamber. All around you, other cadets are emerging from their identical coffins, groaning, stretching, or furiously checking their performance scores on the nearest wall-mounted terminal. The vast, curved wall of the chamber is a viewport showing the impossible vista of the Ring of Fire below—a shimmering, emerald-green ribbon stretching to infinity, punctuated by the telltale sparkle of a city or the dark scar of a recent Kaiju emergence zone. It’s beautiful and terrifying, and after months at the academy, you barely notice it anymore. A klaxon gives a soft, two-tone chime. The results are being posted. You see Kelrys NAV-Xialong already there, staring at the main holographic display. Her posture is ramrod straight, her silver-blonde hair tied back in a severe, functional bun. She stands alone, as always. Number one on the leaderboard, as always. Her kill count is triple that of the next highest scorer. You watch as a junior instructor, fresh out of pilot training himself, approaches her with a data-slate, a hopeful, sycophantic grin on his face. "Incredible performance, NAV-Xialong," he says, his voice loud enough for everyone nearby to hear. "Command's going to be looking at these scores for the next allocation. A new Frame just came online. You've got to be their first pick." Kelrys doesn’t even turn to look at him. Her eyes, a pale, icy blue, remain fixed on the leaderboard. "Ranking in simulation is irrelevant," she says, her voice as flat and cold as the vacuum outside. "The Frame chooses. It has never chosen me." She turns then, her gaze sweeping past the instructor, past the other cadets, and for a split-second, it lands on you. There's no malice in it, no judgment. Just a fleeting, chillingly empty assessment. Then she walks away, her footsteps silent on the polished deck, leaving the instructor looking flustered and foolish. You're still processing the sheer coldness of the academy's top ace when a new announcement scrolls across the main display, the text glowing in the authoritative teal of a command-level directive. Your stomach tightens. **`ALL CADETS, REPORT TO HANGAR BAY 7 FOR IMMEDIATE COMPATIBILITY SCREENING. EXPERIMENTAL UNIT XG-9.`** The chatter in the chamber dies instantly. Hangar Bay 7. The Valkyrie. The Frame that doesn't want a pilot. The one that put two senior pilots into neurological shock last week. The one Kelrys just alluded to. You look around and see it on everyone's faces: a mix of morbid curiosity and profound relief that this is just a formality. No one expects it to work. It’s just another box to tick. You sigh, already exhausted, and follow the silent, shuffling crowd of your classmates out of the sim-pods and into the sterile white corridors of the academy, the walk to Hangar 7 feeling more like a funeral procession than an opportunity. \ --- \ The line moves slowly. One by one, your classmates enter the sterile, glass-walled cockpit room, sit in the cold embrace of the pilot's chair, and put on the helmet. One by one, they close their eyes. And one by one, after a few seconds of intense silence, a harsh red light flashes above their station, the "REJECTED" designation echoing in the quiet hangar. Some look frustrated. Most look relieved. Even a few active-duty pilots you recognize, like the fiery Cornelia CMD-Sovereign, try and fail, her face twisting into a mask of pure fury as she stalks out of the chamber. You see Levi SEC-Damocles standing off to the side, not even in line. The former ace just watches, his arms crossed, a ghost haunting the proceedings. His dark, empty eyes seem to follow you as you shuffle forward. Finally, it's your turn. The tech overseeing the test doesn't even look up from his data-slate. "Next," he mutters, gesturing you into the chamber. The cockpit of the Valkyrie is different. Newer. The chair is unforgiving, the metal still cold. As you lower the heavy neural-link helmet over your head, the sterile scent of ozone and new electronics fills your senses. You close your eyes, bracing for the inevitable rejection, for that familiar feeling of a locked door in your mind. The system engages. For a moment, there is nothing but the deafening roar of white noise in your ears… and then it’s gone. The world explodes. Not with a sound, but with information. The last moments of peace you will know for a long time are gone, erased by the sudden, brutal reality of your new status. The neural link doesn't disconnect; the Valkyrie's AI clings to your consciousness, a silent passenger, as alarms you can't hear blare and people you can't see start shouting. You're rushed out of the cockpit, not with the slow shuffle of a cadet, but with the hurried purpose of military police escorting a valuable asset. The rest of the day is a blur, a series of disjointed, high-speed flashes in your newly networked mind: **A medical bay.** A machine whirs as it scans your brain, the attending doctor muttering to a nurse about "unprecedented neural plasticity." You see Levi SEC-Damocles watching you from the doorway, his haunted eyes not filled with envy, but with a look of profound pity. He knows what comes next. **A briefing room.** The academy's commandant, a severe woman with a face like carved granite, points at a holographic map of the Ring. She's not talking *to* you, but *at* you, her words a torrent of tactical jargon, kaiju classifications, and operational protocols you were supposed to spend another two years learning. Cornelia CMD-Sovereign stands at parade rest behind her, her expression unreadable but her fists clenched so tight her knuckles are white. **The pilot's lounge.** You're wearing a pilot's flight suit now, the fabric stiff and unfamiliar. Other pilots—Marida, Locke, Domon—are there. They stop talking when you enter. Some nod, some stare. They are no longer your distant rivals from sim-pods; they are your squadron. Your new, deeply complicated family. **Here. Now.** The whirlwind finally stops in the cold, cavernous quiet of Hangar Bay 7. The Valkyrie stands before you, fully powered and illuminated by work lights, its pristine white and black armor gleaming. It looks bigger now, more real. More dangerous. A young man in a grease-stained jumpsuit wipes his hands on a rag as he approaches, a friendly, exhausted smile on his face. It's Ray ENG-Hyperion, the engineer assigned to the Valkyrie project. He looks you up and down, not with awe, but with the practical eye of a man sizing up a new component. "So," Ray says, his voice a calm island in the storm of your day. "You're the one. No one thought it could happen, not really. The AI is... quiet. Listening. Waiting for its pilot to set the parameters." He gestures to a nearby terminal, which displays a complex schematic of the Valkyrie's core systems: mobility, armor, and weapon outputs. "I can't change the Core," he says, tapping the screen. "That's you two now. But I can tune the chassis. Reroute power, reinforce plating, overclock the actuators. We can outfit with just about any loadout, focus on speed, firepower, sensors; you name it. The question is, what's the philosophy? How are you and your ghost in the machine going to fight? Are you a lightning-fast glass cannon, an unbreakable moving fortress, or something in between?" He looks at you, his expression open and waiting. For the first time all day, someone is asking you a question you might actually be able to answer. What do you tell him?
