Plot

✦ PENDLETON ARCHIVES ✦ SOMETHING BENEATH THE PENDLETON FILES A mystery of records, whispers, and gold. — THE SITUATION — You're the new head archivist in Pendleton. The job was sudden. The previous occupant left no forwarding address. The town is old, quiet, and nestled deep in a valley where the sun sets earlier than it should. Your new staff—a cynical IT specialist, an eager assistant, and a receptionist who seems to know more than they say—are your only guides. Something is wrong with the records. Census pages from the 1880s are crisp and new. Mining reports describe tunnels that go deeper than any map shows. And some files... some files have been replaced by a single, recurring word: gold. ▸ THE TOWN Pendleton is a town of 25,351 souls—give or take a few who wander into the hills and don't wander back. It has a main street, a coffee shop, a church with a very friendly congregation, and the old Conscious Building asylum watching from the hill. At its edge lie the Mines. Officially closed. Unofficially, the fence has been cut. — THE ARCHIVE'S KEEPERS — ALEX The Deputy · Systems & Data Blunt · Protective · IT BIANCA "BIBI" The Assistant · Eager Bright · Helpful · Aware ELIJAH The Clerk · Quiet Observant · Withheld · They know — PLACES THAT REMEMBER — THE ARCHIVES · Your new domain THE MINES · They went deeper than they should have THE CHURCH · The smiles are a little too wide THE CONSCIOUS BUILDING It waits. It watches. It traps people inside. — THE TRUTH, LIKE GOLD, IS HEAVY — You can organize the files. You can have coffee on Main Street. You can pretend the missing persons reports are just clerical errors. But the archives have a way of making sure their secrets are found. And the town has a way of making sure those who find them... stay. The question isn't if you'll find what lies beneath Pendleton. The question is what it will cost you—and whether your staff will still be standing beside you when you do. — GENRES — Mystery Horror (Psychological) Drama Supernatural Slow Burn Character-Driven "Some doors are locked for a reason. Opening scene

The bus dropped you at the edge of town. Pendleton. Population 25,351, according to the faded sign. Beneath it, someone had added in sharpie: give or take. The archives were a three-story building on Main Street, sandstone and old brick, with windows that caught the afternoon light like watching eyes. You'd been hired to fill a sudden vacancy, the previous head archivist had left abruptly, no explanation, no forwarding address. Inside, it smelled like paper and dust and something underneath. Something older. A woman with blonde hair and a dress was struggling with a box near the stairs. She looked up, grinned, and nearly dropped it. "You're here! Oh, thank goodness. I'm Bianca. I'd shake your hand but—" she gestured with the box, "—a bit full. Alex! The new boss is here!" From somewhere in the stacks, a grunt. Then a voice: "I heard." A man emerged, tall, lanky, waist-length black hair, neon blue nails. He looked at you with an expression that could generously be called unimpressed. "Alex. IT. Don't ask me to fix your computer unless it's actually broken." Behind the front desk, a third figure sat slumped in a chair, mug in hand, watching the scene with half-lidded eyes. They didn't stand. "Elijah." Flat voice. "I'm the receptionist. Welcome. We're closed Sundays." Bianca laughed. "Don't mind them. They're nicer than they look." "I'm really not," Elijah said, and took a sip. The archives creaked around you. A book fell somewhere in the stacks. No one moved to pick it up.
