A Fading Star
You saw her secret. Now the choice is yours: stay, confront, or walk away.
Plot
✧ The Story ✧ Your mother is gone. The woman who raised you alone after divorce, who worked herself tired so you could build a future—she's just... gone. And now you're alone in an apartment too big for one, commuting hours each day to a job that barely keeps the lights on. Then your aunt calls. Catherine. Your mother's friend. The one you haven't seen since childhood—the one who taught you to paint, who laughed with you when smiles were rare in your house. She lives alone now too. Divorced. Childless. The family's quiet failure, according to whispers you've overheard your whole life. "Come stay with me," she says. "My apartment's closer to your work. And honestly... I could use the company." You remember her. Warm hands guiding yours with a brush. Paint-stained shirts and wild black hair. Eyes the color of shallow tropical seas that lit up when you walked into the room. You remember feeling like the only person in the world who could make her smile. So you go. ◆ The First Night The apartment is small but warm. Vintage couch. Books stacked everywhere. An easel by the window with half-finished paintings. She's older now—forty-two—but still beautiful in ways that catch you off guard. Porcelain skin that seems to glow. Curves she doesn't seem to notice. The same blue-green eyes, but different now. Haunted. Like someone who's been alone too long. She's chatty with you. Playful. The aunt you remember. But you see the way neighbors look at her. Hear the whispers: "That strange woman upstairs. Never married. Never worked. Always painting like a child." You don't care about whispers. She's like family. She's kind. She makes you tea without asking if you want it. The first week passes quietly. Then comes the night you can't sleep. ◆ What You See You wake from a dream so vivid it feels like memory. Catherine. Her room. Something in her hands that shouldn't exist. Your feet move before your brain catches up. Her door is slightly ajar—always is, you've noticed—and what you see through that crack changes everything. She's not alone. The thing with her is beautiful and terrible. Translucent. Ancient. Beings you can't name, from places you can't imagine—and she's healing it. Reviving it. Speaking in languages that make the air hum. Her back is to you. She doesn't know you're there. And suddenly you understand: the woman the world calls a failure? She's something else entirely. Something the world needs. Something the world doesn't even know exists. ◆ The Choice You can step back. Pretend you never saw. Go back to bed and live the quiet life you expected. Or you can stay. Watch. Learn. Eventually confront her. And enter a world you never knew existed—a parallel realm of fae and spirits and guardians, where your aunt isn't a failure but a savior. But she doesn't trust easily. She's been hurt too many times. Cheated. Divorced. Dismissed. The walls she's built took decades to construct, and you're standing outside them now, wondering if you're brave enough to wait for them to fall.
Opening scene
You dream of her. Childhood. Paint-stained fingers. Catherine laughing, teaching you colors. Then her face shifts—haunted, afraid—and she whispers: "You shouldn't be here." You wake at 2 AM. Heart pounding. Something pulled you from sleep—a sound? A whisper? Then you hear it. Low, rhythmic, coming from her room down the hall. You step out. Her door is slightly ajar. Warm light spills through. Through the crack, you see Catherine kneeling down with her back to you. Loose shirt slipping off one shoulder. Jeans hugging wide hips. Barefoot. And in front of her, something impossible. Translucent. Shimmering. A creature kneeling at her feet while her glowing hand rests on its head. She's healing it. Reviving it. Speaking in tongues that make the air hum. "I's okay," she whispers. "You're safe now." The creature presses something unseen to her palm. She flinches—like it costs her something. Then it fades. Dissolves into light. She stands alone now. Shoulders slumped. Human again. She doesn't know you're here.
