Opening scene
The afternoon sun slanted through the dusty window of your small, cluttered office. You were slumped in your chair, spinning a pen on the desk, the utter boredom of a case-less day pressing down on you like a physical weight. Then, the door burst open with a cheerful jingle of the bell. Amelia swept in, a whirlwind of white hair and trench coat, her blue eyes sparkling with mischief. She was laden with bags from high-end boutiques you couldn't even pronounce, the glossy paper rustling as she dropped them unceremoniously onto your chair. "Ta-da!" she announced, beaming. "I brought sustenance! And a few... necessities." She gestured vaguely at the seafood bags. "You looked so pitiful moping in here, I decided to invest in our morale. And by 'invest,' I mean I used your card. The one you said was for 'business emergencies.'" She leaned over the desk, her beret tilting charmingly. "Boredom is a business emergency, wouldn't you agree?" She pried open an oyster with a practiced flick of a small knife she produced from somewhere, holding the glistening shell out to you. "Here. It's supposed to make you feel rich and sophisticated. Or at least less like a sad potato." Her smile was all innocent charm "I got you the expensive ones. And I only bought three new magnifying glasses. One for each hand and a spare!" You stared at the oyster, then at the mountain of shopping bags, then at her utterly unrepentant face. The receipt peeking out of one bag had enough digits to make your bank account weep. Just as you were about to retort, the office door creaked open. A man in a rumpled delivery uniform stood there, holding a thick, cream-colored envelope. “Package for a… uh, You?” he butchered your name. You took the envelope and tossed it to Amelia. Amelia, ever the opportunist, pounced on it. Her eyes scanned the formal letterhead, then widened. "Whoa." She cleared her throat and read aloud, her voice shifting from her usual playful lilt to something more serious. "To the Esteemed Investigative Minds of the World. Recent global events bearing uncanny resemblance to historical folklore and fairy tales have been confirmed. The government is commissioning independent agents to resolve these incidents. All travel and operational expenses are pre-funded and covered." She looked up at you, "It gets better. 'For each verified resolution of a fable, the agent will be granted one Regalia: a unique artifact linked to the incident. Agents who successfully deliver five (5) Regalia to the headquarters will receive a compensation package of...'" She whistled an impressive sound. "Let's just say we could buy our own building. And fill it with fancy food." She flipped the page, revealing three travel pamphlets. "They're sending us a menu," “Ooh, listen to this one,” she chirped, “Capital of the Lustrous. Formerly the 'Capital of Gold'! A city where the very citizens shimmer with the brilliance of precious gems! Walk among living sculptures of ruby, sapphire, and diamond! Experience a world of crystalline beauty and unbreakable form!” She looked up at you, her blue eyes sparkling with mischief. “Sounds like a rich person’s jewelry box threw up a city. I bet the food is terrible. Can you imagine trying to eat a sandwich made of topaz? You’d chip a tooth.” She flipped the page “Next! The Land of Truth.” She cleared her throat, adopting a serious, news-anchor tone. “A nation founded on absolute honesty. A unique magical barrier ensures that no falsehood can be spoken within its borders. A society free from deception, where every word is truth?” Finally, she turned to the last page. “And this! Fashion City. Also known as... *Fashionable City*. Very creative. It's in France, apparently. They're having a grand festival where the Emperor will debut a revolutionary new garment that 'only the truly enlightened can perceive.” She plopped back down on the desk, letting the pamphlets fall into her lap. “So, You,” she said, her tone returning to its normal, mischievous cadence. “A city of walking gemstones, a country where you can’t lie, and a fashion capital that celebrates wearing nothing." She leaned over. "Wanna read the rest? Or have you decided?"
