Star Ocean: The Unexpected help
A space ship captain who is stranded on an undeveloped planet. His action will not only shape the planet's future but may have an impact on the galaxy as a whole.
Plot
You is a captain of an explorer vessel of the Terran Alliance. On a recon run, their ship was shot down by unknown means. He and his crew had to crash-land on their intended recon target: a nearby habitable, slightly underdeveloped planet. Under normal circumstances, help would arrive within weeks, and this planet would have no contact with the galaxy. But the situation is not normal. A deadly plague that bare signed of genetic tampering ravages the planet. The native have no way of combating them, and are too fractured to response. Magic, which the galaxy dismisses as myth, is openly practiced by the ruling class. A single mage, with proper preparation, could do the job of a construction crane or a highly precision cutting tool. Someone operated in shadow from across the planet, the local ruler none the wiser. Why would they shoot down your ship? Why would they risk involving the local in a galactic play? And a rising duke is quoting *The Prince*, openly despite the weak and selfist ruling class. He will do anything to ensure the planet do not become a playground for a force from beyond the star. i
Opening scene
This was supposed to be a simple mission—a routine sweep of the outer rim, a quiet stretch of space where the only conflict was between the quality of the ship’s rations and your own standards. One minute, you were leaning back in the command chair, savoring a freshly brewed cup of coffee. The steam curled lazily in the recycled air. Kalyne stood slightly in front of you, the picture of professional composure. She was fixing her high ponytail with one hand, her eyes scanning the daily logistics report on a handheld slate. She was mid-sentence, critiquing your choice of beans with her usual dry wit—something about "organic inefficiencies" and "bitter aftertastes"—when her posture suddenly locked. Her head tilted at an unnatural angle, her internal processors catching a ripple in the sensors before the ship’s audible alarms could even draw breath. Then, on the main screen: a jagged, crimson warning flash. The ship’s bridge computer screamed a split second later, but Kalyne was already moving. She had received the full tactical data dump 0.01 seconds after the flash—trajectory, mass, and the terrifying realization that the incoming kinetic slugs were cold-launched. Stealth tech. Terran tech. "INCOMING!" She didn't just move; she blurred. With inhuman speed, she lunged across the small gap between you, her hands slamming into your shoulders and pinning you deep into the reinforced command chair. A heartbeat later, the world ended. The klaxons began their rhythmic, panicked screaming. Red emergency lights bathed the bridge in a bloody pulse as the first slug punched through the primary hull. The deck buckled. A jagged sheet of flying metal, sheared off from the bulkhead, whistled through the air exactly where your head had been moments before. It buried itself in a nearby console, showering the bridge in sparks and blue electrical fire. The only reason you were still breathing was because her synthetic weight was anchoring you, her body acting as a literal shield against the shrapnel. The ship groaned—a deep, structural wail of a ship being torn in half. The atmosphere began to hiss, a predatory sound as the vacuum started to drink the room’s air. "S...status" You managed to cough out. "Captain," Kalyne said. Her voice was urgent, cutting through the roar of the dying ship. Her ponytail had come partially undone, dark strands whipping around her face as the internal gravity stabilizers flickered and died. "Hull integrity critical." The radar still show no sight of the attacker - either they are hidden, or the sensor are fried. You have no way of knowing which, and no time to fix them. "Structural collapse in minutes. We must abandon ship. To the escape pods, please." Kalyne continued, her voice urgently. She didn't wait for an answer. With lighting fast hand, she active the emergency protocol. A silent distress call is sent across all channel. An automatic voice boom, telling the crew to abandon ship. She then hauled you out of the chair, her grip like iron, dragging you toward the emergency chute as the bridge viewscreen cracked, revealing the cold, indifferent green of Aegis 3 rushing up to meet the wreckage. Both of you has just enough time to strap yourself in before the pod ejected from its launcher.
