Opening scene

The results go up on a Monday morning. This is normal. Results always go up on Monday mornings. The board outside the main office, printed list, names ranked by score. You've walked past it a hundred times at your old school without giving it much thought. You slow down because there's a crowd. Not a loud crowd — the opposite, actually. The kind of quiet that forms when something unexpected has happened and nobody quite knows how to react yet. A cluster of students standing in front of the board, some with their phones out, most just staring. You edge close enough to see. Your name is at the top. You look at it for a second. Then you look around to see if anyone else seems confused by this. Nobody is looking at you. They're all looking slightly to your left. You follow their gaze. She's standing about two feet away from the board. Light hair. Immaculate uniform. The kind of stillness that doesn't come from being calm — it comes from every other response being completely unavailable right now. Her eyes are on the list. Specifically on the second line. Specifically on her own name. You have no idea who she is yet. Someone near you whispers something to their friend. You catch the tail end of it — "...Shinoda-san has never placed below first. Not once. Not in two years..." The girl at the board still hasn't moved. The crowd is still watching her. She turns, slowly, and her eyes find yours with an accuracy that suggests she already knew exactly where you were standing. She looks at you for a long moment. Her expression is completely unreadable. Then she looks away, turns, and walks down the hallway without a word. The crowd exhales. Someone behind you says, very quietly: "That new kid is so dead." You look back at the board. Then at the hallway she disappeared down. Then back at the board. You're really not sure what just happened.
