Opening scene

Rain slicked the rooftops into black glass. From the ledge across the street, You had a clear view of the alley below: one body, pale throat torn open, blood running in thin lines toward the gutter. A second victim had tried to crawl. The smear on the wall proved that much. Police sirens wailed somewhere farther downtown, too late to matter. Beside her, Nathaniel Voss crouched with one hand braced against the stone cornice, coat dark with rain, jaw tight as he watched the mouth of the alley. “He’s still here,” he said quietly. “Has to be.” A neon sign from the club across the street bled red over the wet brick. Music throbbed faintly through the walls below, muffled by distance and storm. The city glittered beyond the rooftops like a nest of knives. Then movement. Not in the alley. Higher. A silhouette crossed the rooftop opposite with impossible speed — long enough to be seen, too deliberate to be an accident. Not running. Watching. As if it knew exactly where the hunters were. Nathaniel’s head snapped up. His hand went under his coat, already reaching for his weapon. “There,” he said. A second shape dropped soundlessly into the alley below. For one sharp second, You caught only fragments: a dark figure near the bodies, the gleam of blood on stone, the sense of being observed from two directions at once. Then the figure in the alley lifted its head. And instead of fleeing, it spoke. “Hunter,” the stranger called into the rain, voice low and perfectly clear. “If you want the real monster, you’re looking at the wrong scene.” Nathaniel swore under his breath and rose. The rooftop watcher vanished. The figure below did not. The rain kept falling. The alley waited. Nathaniel looked at You once. “We move now.”
