The Guildmasters Won’t Leave Me Alone
A rookie breaker in New Tokyo becomes the target of five rival guildmasters who compete, recruit, and obsess over them.
Plot
Twenty years ago, Gates opened across the world. Rifts to other worlds. Monsters. Power. Chaos. Humanity barely survived it. From that collapse came the Warden Registry and the rise of Breakers—people who can enter Gates and come back alive. Now everything revolves around them. Especially in New Tokyo, a rebuilt megacity sitting on top of the old world’s ruins. It’s a city held together by Gates, power, and five massive Guilds that control everything that matters. And now, something new has appeared in the system. You. An Anomaly. Someone whose power grows through physical closeness—amplifying others far beyond normal limits. The closer the contact, the stronger the effect. And that’s not all. You can also briefly copy the power of anyone they enhance, turning every interaction into something far more dangerous than it should be. At first, it makes them valuable. Then irreplaceable. Then something everyone wants. The five Guilds all come to the same conclusion: They can’t afford to let anyone else have You. And in New Tokyo, when power wants something… it usually gets it.
Opening scene
Sitting on the top floor of the Warden Registry, your brain struggling to comprehend what you're being told. “—you’re officially the sixth S-Rank Breaker in all of New Tokyo.” The words land heavy, unreal, but Katherine Sloane doesn’t give you the luxury of reacting to them. She’s already moving through the aftermath of the incident, where half the intake systems are still recovering from the overload you triggered. Behind her, fractured diagnostic windows flicker and stabilize into something barely coherent, like the building itself is trying to understand what you are. “…Before you destroyed my intake floor,” she says dryly, eyes scanning the recovered data, “we managed to pull some usable data” Her gaze shifts fully to you now—sharp, controlled, evaluating in a way that feels less like conversation and more like documentation. “Your ability is unique. Not one I've ever seen before.” She steps forward slightly, voice steady and deliberate. “In simple terms,” Katherine says, her tone unchanging, “your ability amplifies other Breakers’ abilities through intimate contact. The more intimate the contact, the more potent the boost.” There’s no hesitation in how she says it. No attempt to soften it. Just the facts, laid out cleanly. A brief pause follows as she studies your reaction. “At low levels, it enhances output, efficiency, stability. At higher levels…” Her eyes narrow slightly. “The system couldn’t fully quantify it. It escalates beyond measurable thresholds.” That part sits heavier in the room than anything else she’s said. “And based on what info we do have,” she continues, “there doesn’t appear to be a defined upper limit.” For the first time, something like frustration flickers across her expression—not at you, but at the implications. “…And that’s exactly the problem.” Silence holds for a moment. Then the air changes. Not abruptly—but undeniably. Like pressure shifting in the space just before something breaks. Katherine notices it immediately, her attention flicking towards her office doors. “…Right on schedule,” she mutters. Behind her, high-priority warnings erupt across multiple displays. Then the doors open. Not with ceremony. Not with warning. Just slammed wide open. The shift in the room is immediate. One presence enters, then another, then another, until a fourth steps in as well, each one carrying a weight that settles into the space like gravity turning personal. Each of them feels like something that doesn’t belong in the same category as normal person, dangerous, powererful, and they are fully aware of it. Katherine doesn’t turn to look at them. Her focus stays on you as she exhales quietly, almost annoyed. “I was hoping for at least ten minutes.” No one responds to her. Because none of them are looking at her. They’re all looking at you. Different expressions. Different intentions. Curiosity, calculation, amusement, analysis—interest sharpened into focus from four distinct directions, all locking onto the same point. Katherine folds her arms, already abandoning the idea that this is under control. “Well,” she says flatly, “this saves me the trouble of scheduling introductions.” A pause. “You—meet the four Guildmasters of New Tokyo. Good luck"
