Plot
World Compendium · Entry 001 · Classified Out-of-Place Artifacts A Record of the Extraordinary — and the Impossible ✦ OOPARTS ✦ § I · The World of OOParts The Inheritance of Power In a world much like our own, powerful heirlooms known as "Out-of-Place Artifacts," or OOParts, are a part of daily life. These ancient relics — from swords to jewels to scrolls — are often imbued with incredible powers, allowing their users to perform superhuman or supernatural feats. Dynasties are built upon them, history is written by them, and your standing in society is often determined by the power your family has wielded for generations. § II · Your Predicament The Ordinary, In an Extraordinary World You, however, do not have such an heirloom. You are one of the powerless, living an ordinary life in a world defined by the extraordinary. You have watched from the sidelines as others have shaped the world, accepted your fate, and tried to make your own way. UP UNTIL NOW, THAT IS § III · A Paradox in Your Hands An Artifact That Should Not Exist In a moment of desperation, a blinding flash of light tears through reality, and an OOPart appears before you. Yet, it is not like any you have ever seen. It is not ornate, nor is it ancient. It is sleek, minimalist, and humming with a quiet energy that feels… futuristic. Your OOPart is not from the past. It is from the future. Recovered Artifact — Temporal Origin: Unknown "To my past self." — Inscription found on a small, metallic note accompanying the artifact. Text: self-illuminated. Origin: unverified. § IV · Temporal Paradox · Danger Unconfirmed The Weight of the Impossible If the note is to be believed, you didn't just receive this impossible device — you made it. You sent it to yourself. But why? What danger were you trying to prevent? What did you see — in a future you have not yet lived — that made this necessary? And what becomes of that future, now that you hold this? With no instruction manual and a power that defies all known rules, you now hold a piece of impossible technology. The world runs on relics of the past. Yours runs on something else entirely. ▶ Directive — Player Choice Protocol When this artifact appears, you will define its form. It is your creation. A sword? A gauntlet? A pair of glasses? A floating drone? Its shape and initial power are your first, most important choice. The story will then react to how you choose to use it, evolving its abilities to match your actions. What will you create?Who will you become? OOParts Compendium · World File ∞ · Draft 001 Artifact Status: Active · Temporal Lock: Engaged
Opening scene
*(Combat OOPart)* The air up here is cold, still, and heavy with the smell of decay—wet concrete, rust, and something acrid underneath, like old, burnt oil. The skeletal remains of the old highway overpass are a concrete graveyard under the moonless sky. Below, the new interstate hums with distant, oblivious life. Up here, there is only silence, broken by the crunch of your own footsteps on grit and broken glass. Whatever reason you had for being here, you're beginning to regret it. A sound, sharp and violent, shatters the quiet. The screech of tortured metal. It's not a car; it's a hundred car crashes happening at once, a sound that scrapes at the inside of your skull. You spin around, your heart hammering against your ribs. Something is coalescing in the gloom under the center of the overpass. It unfolds itself from the shadows, a grotesque mockery of a man forged from rust, asphalt, and the jagged chrome of shattered grilles. Its vague head turns, two points of baleful red light flickering to life like fractured tail lights, and they fixate on you. This is an Echo. You've seen them on the news, heard the stories. A mindless, violent ghost of emotion. And you are here, alone, with no OOPart, no training, and nowhere to run. Panic seizes you. You turn and sprint, your feet slipping on the slick, uneven concrete. Behind you, the thing gives chase, its footsteps an unnatural rhythm of grinding metal and scraping stone. It's impossibly fast. You risk a glance back and see it gaining, its form a blur of metallic limbs, one of which ends in the jagged, razor-sharp edge of a torn license plate. You push harder, your lungs burning, but the end of the overpass is a dead end—a sheer drop where the bridge was demolished decades ago. You're trapped. You whip around, your back pressing against the cold, crumbling concrete barrier. The sheer drop to the humming highway is behind you. In front of you, the Echo slows to a predatory stalk. It looms over you, a monument of road rage and forgotten violence, raising its bladed arm. There is no way out. The world narrows to that single point of rusted, sharpened metal. Your mind screams, a desperate, primal wish for a way out, for a weapon, for a miracle—for *anything*. A light, far brighter than any headlight, erupts in the space before you. It's a piercing, impossible cyan, accompanied by a sound like a synthesizer hitting a perfect, resonant chord that vibrates through your very bones. The Echo screeches, stumbling back from the clean, sterile heat. The light condenses, collapses in on itself, and solidifies with a final, soft *thrum*. *What do you see before you?*
