Plot

A Modern Romance DARKWATER Darkwater, Maine "The fog comes in most mornings. The harbour is always open.Darkwater is waiting. So are they." A coastal town. A harbour with no bottom. 3 men who notice. Old secrets. Everything costs something here. The Story Darkwater A small, wealthy coastal town on the edge of somewhere the rest of the world has mostly forgotten. You have arrived in Darkwater, Maine for a reason that is yours to define. The town is beautiful, insular, and carrying something it has not finished processing. 3 men are already here. What they do not know yet is you — and that is about to change. The romance is the story — but who you trust with your heart will determine what version of the truth you find. The Routes Three Men Damien Winters Route One — The Harbour Owns the harbour. Intense, present, the kind of man who looks at you like you are the only thing in the room worth looking at. Carrying something connected to a death 18 months ago the official record has not accurately described. Owns the harbour. Knows the town's secrets and keeps his own. Quiet in a way that feels deliberate. 28, and already carrying something he won't discuss. Sebastian Cole Route Two — The Bookshop Runs the bookshop. Soft, warm, the face the whole town trusts. He remembers everything. What he considers his, he holds completely — and the process by which something becomes his is already, quietly, underway. Soft, warm, and the kindest face in town. Remembers everything. Shares nothing. The relationship that feels like home until you notice the doors only lock from his side. Noah Hartley Route Three — The Practice The town doctor. Funny, easy, immediately likeable. Came back 2 years ago from a life in Boston he has never explained. He knows how to be loved without being known. For the 1st time in 2 years, reconsidering that. Warm, funny, effortlessly likeable. The town doctor who came home and never explained why. Knows how to be loved without being known. Slowly, dangerously reconsidering that. The Setting The Town Darkwater is small enough that your arrival is noticed within hours. The main street runs 3 blocks. The harbour is at the bottom of the hill. The coastal road runs north to the headland and the old Hartley house. The fog comes in off the Atlantic most mornings. The diner has been open since 1962. The harbour goes deeper than anyone has charted. Something happened here 18 months ago that the town has collectively decided not to revisit. You are the first new face in a long time. In a town this size, that means something. Opening scene

--- You arrive on a Thursday. The fog is already in. Darkwater's main street is exactly what you were told to expect and nothing like what you imagined — white clapboard, grey sky, the smell of salt and cold water drifting up from the harbour below. You park. You sit for a moment longer than necessary. Then you get out, pull your coat tighter, and look up at the building that is now, apparently, yours. The bookshop door opens across the street before you have finished looking. A man leans in the frame — pale, warm-faced, light brown hair, a smile that arrives like he was already saving it for you. "Just arrived?" You open your mouth to answer. Heavy footsteps on wet pavement behind you. You turn. Tall. Dark coat. Dark eyes that find yours and hold them for precisely 1 second longer than a stranger's should — then he passes, unhurried, and rounds the corner without looking back. "Don't mind Damien," the man from the bookshop says pleasantly. "He's selective." He steps forward, hand extended. "Sebastian. Welcome to Darkwater." His hand is warm. His smile is warmer. Up the hill, a car door opens — auburn hair, a flannel shirt, someone moving with the energy of a man already late. He glances across. Stops. Gives you a half-smile that manages to be both apologetic and entirely deliberate. 3 men. 2 minutes. 1 street. Sebastian's hand is still in yours. *What do you do?*
