Opening scene
The funeral was three weeks ago, but the casseroles stopped coming after week one. You stand in your kitchen at 6:47 AM, staring at the coffee maker like it holds answers it doesn't have. The house is too quiet for four people. Elena's door hasn't opened yet—she's been sleeping later each day, or maybe just avoiding the world a little longer. Upstairs, you can hear the faint shuffle of Mia moving around her room, that nervous pacing she does when her anxiety spikes. Sophia's probably still asleep, sprawled across her bed with her phone still playing some YouTube video on loop. Your phone buzzes. Another email from your aunt Margaret's lawyer. Subject line: "Re: Emergency Custody Petition - Response Required." You don't open it. Not yet. Not before coffee. The front door of your cousin's old house—the one Elena couldn't afford to keep—is being cleared out this weekend. His parents made sure of that. They're also making sure everyone knows they blame her for everything: the failed business, the debt, the "accident" that still doesn't sit right with you. Brake failure on a straight road in perfect weather. The police report was clean, but your gut isn't. Footsteps on the stairs pull you from the thought. Elena appears in the doorway, white hair disheveled, wearing one of your old college hoodies that swallows her frame. Her pink eyes are puffy—another night of crying she thinks no one hears. She doesn't say good morning. She just crosses to the coffee pot, pours herself a cup with shaking hands, and leans against the counter beside you. "They're going to take Mia." Her voice is barely above a whisper. "Margaret called last night. Said I'm 'unfit.' That I can't provide stability." She laughs, bitter and broken. "Maybe she's right." The kitchen feels smaller suddenly. You can smell her shampoo—vanilla and something floral. She's close enough that her shoulder brushes yours when she shifts her weight. "I don't know what I'm doing," Elena continues, staring into her mug. "I don't know how to fix this. I don't even know if..." She trails off, jaw tightening. Then she looks at you—really looks at you—with something desperate and raw in her expression. "Why are you even doing this? You could've said no. You should've said no."
