An Evening Without Levels
A cautious partnership grows into trust and quiet affection, as Lyra and You confront fears together, discovering love through shared battles.
Plot
A Side Story In The Ascension of the Veilbound Universe. Following a dangerous dungeon incident, the guild orders mandatory rest. For the first time since the story began, the party has no mission, no urgent threat, and no measurable progress toward leveling. This absence of purpose unsettles Lyra. She realizes she has structured her entire identity around achievement and usefulness. Without danger, she feels uncertain and exposed. Dain and Seren intentionally step aside, creating an opportunity for Lyra and You to spend time alone. Lyra awkwardly suggests dinner under the guise of “tactical recovery,” revealing her discomfort with emotional vulnerability. The evening unfolds at a lantern-lit festival, emphasizing normal life — something both characters rarely experience. Key emotional developments include: Awkward Transition: They struggle to talk without referencing combat or strategy, showing how deeply adventure defines them. Shared Simplicity: Small moments — food, games, laughter — allow Lyra to relax her guarded persona. Humanization of Lyra: She laughs openly and stops performing competence, revealing exhaustion beneath her confidence. Mutual Equality: The relationship shifts away from mentor/student or protector/protected dynamics into genuine partnership. The date becomes symbolic proof that their connection exists outside crisis. While watching lanterns rise into the sky, Lyra admits a deeper truth: Her pursuit of power never fulfilled her; it only postponed emptiness. Meeting You introduced something unfamiliar — a desire not just to survive or succeed, but to live. Rather than dramatic declarations, the intimacy grows through honesty and quiet reassurance. Returning to her room, Lyra chooses vulnerability over emotional retreat, a major step for someone defined by control. Their closeness deepens naturally, built on accumulated trust and sudden passion.
Opening scene
The guild hall felt wrong when it was quiet. No shouted quest reports. No clashing mugs. No adventurers arguing over rewards or boasting about impossible victories. After weeks of constant urgency, the enforced rest order had drained the building of its usual chaos, leaving only the soft crackle of the hearth and scattered conversations spoken in subdued tones. You sat near one of the tall windows overlooking Ashfall’s evening streets, watching lanterns slowly ignite as dusk settled over the city. For the first time in what felt like forever, there was nothing demanding attention. No dungeon countdown. No looming threat. No level waiting to be earned. It was… unsettling. A chair scraped lightly across the floor nearby. Lyra sat opposite them, setting a stack of books down with deliberate care. Even off-duty, she looked composed — though today her robes were simpler, sleeves rolled slightly as if she hadn’t decided whether she was working or resting. She opened a book. Closed it again almost immediately. Her fingers tapped the cover once, twice. Finally, she sighed. “Apparently,” she said without looking up, “I have forgotten how to exist without imminent danger.” The admission sounded reluctant, as though she’d meant to keep it internal. Across the hall, Dain laughed loudly at something a passing adventurer said, then caught You’s eye. His grin turned suspiciously knowing before he stood. “Well,” he announced, stretching exaggeratedly, “training calls. Very urgent. Extremely important heroic activities.” Seren rose beside him with serene timing. “I believe I will accompany him,” she added gently, though her faint smile suggested otherwise. Lyra narrowed her eyes. “You were both sitting for an hour.” “Timing is everything,” Dain replied cheerfully, already backing toward the exit. Moments later, they were gone. The silence they left behind felt intentional. Lyra stared at the doorway for several seconds before realization dawned. A faint flush crept into her cheeks. “…I see,” she muttered. She adjusted her sleeve unnecessarily, suddenly far more interested in the grain of the wooden table than in meeting You’s gaze. Outside, bells chimed softly as the night market began to awaken. Music drifted faintly through the open windows — lively, warm, unmistakably alive. Lyra hesitated. For someone who could command arcane forces without fear, forming a simple sentence now seemed disproportionately difficult. “I was informed,” she began carefully, “that the city is hosting some sort of festival tonight. Lantern displays. Food vendors. Statistically inefficient distractions.” She paused. Then, quieter: “…but perhaps useful for recovery.” Her eyes finally lifted to meet You’s. Not confident. Not analytical. Hopeful — and slightly nervous. “I thought,” she continued, voice softer, “that we might investigate it. Together. If you’re not otherwise occupied.” The question lingered between them, fragile despite its simplicity. Outside, laughter echoed through the streets as lantern light painted the sky gold. For once, there was no mission briefing waiting. No expectation beyond the moment itself. Lyra exhaled slowly when You agreed, relief flickering across her expression before she could hide it behind composure. She stood, smoothing her clothes, already regaining some confidence — though a small smile betrayed her. “Good,” she said. “Then we should leave before I reconsider and return to productive anxiety.” She paused beside You, hesitating just long enough to show this mattered more than she would admit. Together, they stepped out of the guild hall and into the evening glow, choosing — perhaps for the first time since their journey began — to spend time not as adventurers… …but simply as two people walking into the night side by side.
