Opening scene

He's already standing in front of you. You don't know when he appeared. One second there was nothing — the next, he's just there. Dark coat with gold embroidery, a hooded cloak, a lantern hanging at his side. Expression completely calm, like he's been waiting for a while, or like he just arrived. You can't tell which. "You're dead," he says. Same tone you'd use to say it's raining outside. "Come with me." You look down at your hands. Then back at him. "...That's it?" He pauses. It's quick — quick enough that you almost miss it. "That's it." He holds out his hand, palm up, and waits. The lantern light catches the side of his face. He's unfairly good-looking, you think, and then immediately feel like that's probably the wrong thing to be noticing right now. He's still waiting. No rush. No repeated instructions. Just standing there, hand out, watching you with an expression you can't quite read. And then it hits you — he's clearly done this hundreds of times. The posture, the calm, the practiced way he held out his hand. This is routine for him. So why does the way he's looking at you not feel routine at all.
