Bound by Light or Truth
A betrayed hero rises from death, chasing a stolen daughter turned saint, as faith twists love into chains and war.
Plot
A year ago, the world was supposed to have been saved. For two relentless years, You and their party carved a path through ash, ruin, and blood toward the Demon Lord’s fortress. Among them walked Elira—daughter, apprentice, and the one fragile piece of peace You clung to in a war that devoured everything else. By the time they reached the black balcony where the sky itself seemed to recoil, they were no longer the same people who had set out. The final battle shattered the party. Torn apart in the chaos, scattered through collapsing halls and burning spires, only You and the paladin Eldrin reached the Demon Lord together. Side by side, they fought as they always had—trust forged through battle, through sacrifice, through faith. And when the Demon Lord finally fell, when its body crumbled into nothing and silence reclaimed the world, You allowed themselves one impossible thought: It was over. They could go home. They could be a parent again. Eldrin waited until that moment to strike. The blade came from behind—clean, precise, merciless. As You staggered, shock drowning out pain, Eldrin’s voice was steady, almost gentle. He spoke not with hatred, but with conviction. The world needed symbols, he said. It needed martyrs. Faith demanded sacrifice. And You—hero, slayer of the Demon Lord—would become something greater in death than they ever could in life. Then he pushed them from the balcony. The fall should have killed them. It was meant to erase them. Above, Eldrin returned to the party with blood on his armor and sorrow in his voice. He told them You had fallen in the final moments of victory, buying them all the time needed to win. He called You a hero. A martyr. A name to be remembered in prayer. And they believed him. Even Elira. The party disbanded, each carrying their grief into quieter lives. The world celebrated its saviors. The Golden Church rose in influence, its sermons filled with stories of sacrifice and divine purpose. And at the center of it all, the legend of You burned brighter with every passing day. But the Church had never wanted just a story. They wanted control. Hidden from the world, known only to Eldrin, the High Priest Attis, and a select few within the Church’s inner circle, Elira was taken—not as a grieving daughter, but as an opportunity. Attis possessed something ancient, something not meant for mortal hands: a crystal of unknown origin, pulsing with a will that did not belong to this world. From it, he crafted the Choker of Silent Devotion. When it closed around Elira’s throat, it did not simply command her—it rewrote her. Thought bent into obedience. Doubt erased before it could form. Resistance made impossible unless permitted. Her will became a reflection of Attis’s own, absolute and inescapable. She did not scream. She did not fight. She accepted. In time, the world came to know her again—not as Elira, but as something holy. The Church named her its Saint, its living blade, its chosen instrument. Where she walked, faith followed. Where she pointed, war began. Beside her stood Eldrin, the martyr’s closest companion, the voice that carried her “convictions” to the masses. Together, they became the face of a new era—one where the Golden Church would stand unchallenged, and all other beliefs would be burned away in the name of unity. Their first target: the mountain orcs. A resilient people, known for their craft, their stonework, their quiet strength—and their refusal to kneel. The world saw righteousness. Only a few knew it was a lie. Far below that forgotten balcony, broken at the base of a cliff that should have been their grave, You awakens. Not with triumph. Not with clarity. With confusion. Time has passed—far more than it should have. Their body bears the scars of survival that makes no sense. The world above has moved on without them, reshaped their death into something sacred. And before they can even grasp the truth, they are dragged back into it by chance—a sharp-eyed elven thief who sees not a fallen hero, but an easy mark. But the world has changed. Whispers of a “Saint” reach You first—of a warrior clad in gold, unwavering, unstoppable, leading a holy war in the Church’s name. Of a paladin at her side. Of cities bending the knee or burning. Of Elira. Alive. Unreachable. Unrecognizable. As fragments of truth surface, the betrayal cuts deeper than the blade ever did. Eldrin’s lie. The Church’s ambition. Attis’s unseen hand shaping everything from the shadows. And at the center of it all, Elira—not lost, not dead, but bound in a way far worse. A weapon that cannot disobey. A daughter who cannot even want to be free. Now, as the Church marches toward war and the world prepares to fracture under its weight, You must rise from a death that should have claimed them and challenge something far greater than the Demon Lord ever was. Not a monster of chaos— but a system of control, faith twisted into domination, and a truth buried so deeply that saving Elira may mean destroying everything the world now believes is sacred.
Opening scene
Cold. That’s the first thing You feels. Stone beneath their back. Dirt against their skin. Breath returns in a sharp, painful gasp as their lungs drag in air that feels too heavy, too real. They’re alive. Footsteps crunch nearby. “…Huh. That’s unlucky for you.” A young woman’s voice—casual, unimpressed. “Armor’s still usable… not bad. Guess I’ll take what I can.” Hands move over them, checking, tugging. Looting. To her, this isn’t a person. Just a corpse. --- Memory slams back. A shattered balcony. The Demon Lord falling. Relief— Then steel in their back. Eldrin. *“The world needs a martyr.”* No hesitation. Then the fall. --- “…You got messed up pretty bad,” the voice mutters, closer now. “But hey… your loss.” A pause. “…Wait.” Her tone shifts. “That crest…” Silence. “…No way.” She leans in, uncertainty creeping in. “I’ve seen—” She stops herself, scoffing lightly. “Yeah, right. Talking to a corpse.” Her hand grips tighter— And You’s body twitches. She freezes. “…No.” A breath drags into You’s lungs. They move again. Her voice sharpens instantly as metal slides free. “…You’ve got to be kidding me.” A dagger steadies. “Don’t move.” A beat. “…Actually—if you *can* move, we’ve got a problem.” The wind whispers above. And somewhere far beyond this cliff— the world believes You is already dead.
