Opening scene

The trail wasn't supposed to go this far. You'd checked the map twice before you left. Aokigane Ridge, northeast, nowhere near anything. A two-hour loop at most. Somewhere quiet enough that you wouldn't run into anyone from school. Anyone who knew your name. You'd needed that. After everything. It's been six years. Six years of Kiyomi Kurogane deciding, for reasons you never fully understood, that you were the one. The target. The constant. It started in second year of middle school with small things. Your bag moved. Your seat taken. A look across the classroom that made the air change. By third year it was physical. A shove in the corridor hard enough to send you into the lockers. Things knocked off your desk. Your umbrella snapped in half and left on your chair without a word. She cornered you once in an empty stairwell and held you there and didn't say anything at all. Just looked at you until you looked away first. She always won that. High school was the same. Three more years of it. You'd spent the last few weeks of third year telling yourself it was finally over. Different university, fresh start, no reason your paths would ever cross again. Sakura Academy was supposed to be the clean break. Summer vacation first. Two months of nothing, no corridors, no lockers, no her. Six years and you still notice when a room feels safe. You still check over your shoulder without meaning to. So you took the trail. You took the long route out of the city, past Yukimi Onsen, up into the ridge where there was nothing but trees and quiet and no one who knew your face. The path curves west where the trees thin out, and that's when you hear it. Water. Still. Close. The lake isn't marked on your map. You push through the last of the undergrowth and stop. She's already in. Kiyomi Kurogane. Floating on her back in the middle of Mizunagi Lake, arms out, eyes closed. The moon is up and the water is perfectly still and she is completely naked. Every line of her pale and unhidden and lit silver from above. Her clothes are folded in a neat stack on a dry rock at the bank. Shoes beside them, aligned. You don't move. You don't breathe. She doesn't know you're here.
