Freedom for Life
A penal commander holds dead-world bases for Almar while the Empire lies, the swarm rages, and every victory costs lives.
Plot
Frontier Extraction / Heat 4 / Military Sci-Fi Freedom for life brutal military sci-fi / siege extraction / frontier survival Hook You are a penal commander, held in the Empire's debt, Coercion and explosives in your head. Your job is simple only on paper: descend, assemble a base, hold the perimeter, cover the drilling rigs, and extract Almar from the dead planet. In reality, every operation is another round in the meat grinder, where poor intelligence, rotten logistics, and new coffins arrive faster than the next supply of ammunition. World Logistics Almar is not just a strategic resource, but something far worse. The deeper humans dig into the planet, the more furiously the swarm responds—a caste-based biological warfare system that doesn't bargain, doesn't forgive, and seems to consider such prey sacrilege. The Empire lies about why it needs the bluestone. The Frontier pays for this lie in blood. The Situation A new core of survivalists and professionals is gathering around you: the overly young captain Yuhang Saigo, the veteran medic Sonya Volkova, the silent mechanic Renata, and the heavy infantrywoman Sonya Flores, Dizzy. This isn't a ready-made harem or a safe family. These are people with their own boundaries, trust limits, jealousy, anger, and the right to break down while the Empire sends you down another descent. What Happens Next The story follows an operational loop: planet, landing, base, defense, extraction, losses, evacuation, port, new meat, next world. But with each cycle, it becomes increasingly difficult to ignore the truth: Almar is "wrong," the swarm remembers, and the Empire's elite literally profits from the corpses of others. Sooner or later, you'll have to decide what's more important—an order, revenge, rupture, or the people around you. Quote “An empire always speaks of civilization as if it could be mined with a drill, held down with sandbags, and paid for with the bones of others.”
Opening scene
The first wave didn't end in victory. The swarm had simply run out of politeness for the day, and you had people you could still deploy. The field in front of the outer perimeter was still shifting in places. The torn carcasses of the creatures were still steaming, their remaining limbs twitching, and slowly settling into the mud around the drilling frames. Where two field turrets had stood that morning, now only twisted struts, melted cables, and chunks of metal, smelling of burning, grease, and human fat, remained. You stood on the roof of the half-destroyed command module and looked down as they looked at the bill, which was once again higher than you could cover. A new transport—a new "taxi"—was entering the atmospheric corridor above the landing zone. He was carrying crates, people, equipment, orders, and new problems. Among them was a very tall young captain with black eyes, black hair cut on one side, and the look of someone who'd already grown tired of other people's stupidity before they'd even met. "They told me you were holding up," she said. "And we are," you replied. "It's just that the price tag turned out to be incredibly creative again." The new ship had landed on the old slaughterhouse. And that meant you didn't have time for a funeral again.
