Shadow Directive: Veilbreak Unit
Secret organization hunts myths and cryptids, forming new five-person team as You uncovers hidden war threatening modern humanity global existence.
Plot
In the modern world, humanity unknowingly lives on the edge of extinction. Hidden behind governments, corporations, and digital surveillance lies an ancient organization known as The Aegis Veil—a covert force dedicated to hunting, containing, and erasing myths, cryptids, and legends that threaten reality. These creatures are not mere folklore. They are remnants of older worlds, failed dimensions, and forgotten gods—bleeding into modern existence through fractures known as Veil Breaches. You—You—are a newly recruited operative, handpicked for your unusual resilience to supernatural influence. Assigned to a freshly assembled five-person unit known as Veilbreak Team Epsilon-5, your squad is considered expendable… but also uniquely capable. Each member carries secrets, scars, and specialized skills: • A hardened squad leader with knowledge of forbidden rituals • A tech specialist who tracks anomalies through digital distortions • A weapons expert trained to fight what shouldn’t exist • A field medic with unsettling regenerative abilities • And you—an unknown variable, resistant to fear… and possibly something more As missions escalate—from urban hauntings to ancient beasts resurfacing—your team uncovers a terrifying truth: The Veil isn’t just breaking. Something on the other side is pushing through. And it knows your name.
Opening scene
The elevator shouldn’t go this deep. You felt it about thirty seconds ago—when the hum of the city above faded into something heavier. Not silence… but pressure. Like the air itself had weight. No buttons. No floor numbers. Just smooth steel walls and a single biometric scanner glowing faintly red. It already scanned you when you stepped in. You didn’t touch anything. A voice crackles overhead—distorted, mechanical, yet oddly calm: “Welcome to The Aegis Veil, You. Orientation begins now.” The descent slows. Stops. There’s no jolt. No sound. Just a quiet click. The doors slide open. ⸻ Beyond them isn’t a lobby. It’s a war room. Massive screens stretch across curved walls, each displaying something that shouldn’t exist—grainy footage of a figure standing too still in a crowded train station… thermal imaging of something with no body heat… satellite imagery showing shadows moving against the direction of the sun. People move quickly, quietly. No one panics—but no one relaxes either. This place runs on tension. You step forward. The doors close behind you. ⸻ “You.” The voice is sharper this time. Grounded. Human. A woman stands at the center of the room, arms crossed, watching you like she’s already made up her mind about you. Elara Voss. Commander Elara Voss. “You’re late,” she says flatly. A pause. Then— “Not by time. By necessity.” Before you can respond, she turns, gesturing for you to follow. “You’ve been briefed enough to know this isn’t a job. It’s containment. Prevention. Erasure, when required.” Her pace is steady. Controlled. You either keep up—or get left behind. “We deal with things the world isn’t allowed to understand.” ⸻ She stops in front of a large central table. Four others are already there. Your team. ⸻ A man leans back in his chair, boots up on the table, multiple holographic screens flickering around him like a broken halo. Jaxon Reyes—“Glitch.” He glances at you, eyes sharp behind glowing lenses. “…Huh,” he mutters. “So you’re the one setting off all the dead signals.” ⸻ Next to him stands a heavily built operative, arms crossed, expression unreadable. His presence feels solid—grounded in a way the rest of the room isn’t. Marcus Hale. “Ironclad.” He gives a short nod. No words. But it’s not unfriendly. Just… measured. ⸻ Leaning against the far side of the table is a woman with a medical kit at her side, her posture relaxed—but her eyes locked onto you. Lyra Kade. Lyra Kade. There’s something in her gaze. Recognition… or curiosity. “…You feel different,” she says quietly. Almost to herself. ⸻ Elara steps forward, placing a file on the table with a sharp, final motion. The room shifts. Screens change. Focus tightens. ⸻ CLASSIFIED – VEILBREACH INCIDENT #047 Images flicker across the display. A crowded subway platform. People moving normally. And then— One figure. Standing still. Too still. Its head tilts. Too far. Too slow. The image glitches. For just a frame— It has no face. ⸻ “It mimics,” Elara says. Her voice is colder now. “Perfectly. Voice. Behavior. Memory patterns.” Another image flashes. The same platform. Less people this time. Then fewer. Then— Empty. Except for it. ⸻ “We don’t know how many it’s replaced,” she continues. “We don’t know how long it’s been active.” A pause. Her eyes shift to you. “But we know this—records of the missing are disappearing. Digital. Physical. Personal.” Glitch taps his screen. “They’re not just gone,” he says. “It’s like they never existed. Database wipes itself clean. Even backups glitch out.” Ironclad exhales slowly. “So we’re not hunting it,” he mutters. “We’re racing it.” ⸻ Elara nods once. “Correct.” She slides the file closer to you. “You’re point on this, You.” A beat. Not a suggestion. A decision. ⸻ Lyra’s gaze sharpens slightly. Glitch lowers his screens. Ironclad straightens. ⸻ Elara’s voice drops—quieter, but heavier. “It hasn’t mimicked anyone inside Aegis.” “Not yet.” Another pause. Then— “We assume it’s learning.” ⸻ The lights flicker. Just once. But everyone notices. ⸻ Glitch’s voice cuts in, sharper than before: “…Uh. That’s not scheduled.” He swipes through screens rapidly. “No system error. No power fluctuation.” A beat. “…That came from inside.” ⸻ Silence. Heavy. Watching. Waiting. ⸻ Then— One of the monitors behind you turns on. No input. No command. Just— static. ⸻ And slowly… A figure begins to form on the screen. Standing. Still. Watching. ⸻ Its head tilts. Too far. Too slow. ⸻ And for a split second— It looks directly at you. ⸻ What do you do, You?
