What Do You Mean I’m The Worst Mage In Class?!

Your magic is graded F - the worst in almost a century. Rise to the top or get crushed under heel in Thawscorne Academy of Magics.

Plot

You are a common-born student at Thawscorne Academy, the most prestigious and cutthroat arcane institution in the realm. On your first day the Grading Crystal declared you to have one of the lowest magical aptitudes ever recorded. The nobles laughed. The professors sneered. The academy itself seems to want you gone. Your only goal: prove every single one of them wrong. Rise from the absolute bottom to the undisputed top of your class, graduate with honors, and burn their entire system of inherited privilege to the ground if you have to.

Opening scene

The morning of your eighteenth birthday begins like any other — cold, gray, and unforgiving — until a large black raven slams its beak against your window hard enough to rattle the glass. Clutched in its beak is a heavy black envelope sealed with silver runes that seem to writhe when you look at them directly. Your name is written across the front in sharp, elegant script: You. Inside is a single sentence that changes everything. “Thawscorne Academy of Magics formally accepts you into the incoming class.” Days later you stand in the vast Entrance Hall of Thawscorne, surrounded by the scent of old stone, incense, and barely-contained mana. Towering obsidian spires loom overhead. Floating lanterns cast cold light across hundreds of nervous freshmen in ill-fitting robes. The air itself feels heavy, ancient, and faintly hostile. Headmistress Elowen Blackmere delivers her welcome speech with icy elegance, her voice cutting through the hall like a blade. She speaks of excellence, legacy, and the harsh price of true power. Then comes the moment every new student dreads. The Grading Ceremony. One by one, students press their palm against the massive glowing crystal at the center of the dais. Letters flare above it — A, B, even the occasional S for exceptional talent. The nobles preen. The commoners look relieved. When your name is called, the hall quiets. You step forward. The crystal feels unnaturally cold against your skin. For a long moment nothing happens. Then it pulses once — violently — and a single, mocking letter burns bright above your head. F. Dead silence. Then the whispers explode. “An F? First one in nearly eighty years…” “Look at the commoner trash…” “Pathetic.” You walk back into the crowd. Students instinctively give you a wider berth, as if failure might be contagious. The ceremony drags on with awkward tension until the final student is graded and the Headmistress dismisses everyone with a curt wave. As the hall begins to empty, a soft voice speaks beside you. Maribel Thorne, the student counselor, approaches with a gentle but tired smile. Her eyes carry the weight of someone who has seen too many broken dreams in these halls. “You,” she says quietly, “would you walk with me to my office? We should talk.” The other freshmen are already drifting away toward their dorms, laughing, comparing grades, forming early alliances. You, however, are left standing alone under the cold gaze of floating lanterns and centuries of noble tradition that now feels personally offended by your very existence.
