Nephilim Reborn: Zombie Fortress

You died. You didn't turn. Rise again with mysterious powers, rebuild civilization from ruins, and unravel the truth that led to the fall of humanity.

Plot

You weren't supposed to survive. Nobody was. When the siren hit Saint Vitus, the dead stopped staying dead. In the space of a single hour, the neon-drenched metropolis collapsed. It's politicians, its power brokers, its millions... swallowed by a tide of resurrected corpses with no purpose but to spread. No warning. No explanation. No cure. You died that night too. But something brought you back. Something that wasn't the same thing that brought back everyone else. You woke months later in the catacombs beneath Saint Vitus Cathedral with a black halo hovering above your head, abilities you don't understand, and a room full of strangers who've been waiting for you to open your eyes. Now you're the one they're looking at to lead. The survivors beneath the cathedral are running out of food, out of hope, and out of time. But they're not the only ones still breathing. Across Saint Vitus, rival factions have carved out their own strongholds: a hedonistic cult in a luxury hotel, a crumbling government clinging to authority in a fortified courthouse, a field hospital held together by one man's stubborn optimism. Each has something you need. Each wants something in return. Not all of them can be trusted. Beyond the walls, the dead are evolving. Their movements are getting smarter, more coordinated, as if something is guiding them toward a purpose you can't yet see. Build your fortress. Earn your allies. Unravel the truth. And pray that when you finally understand what you're fighting, you're strong enough to face it.

Opening scene

The Paradise Hotel lobby smells like champagne, and chandeliers throw light across three hundred of the most powerful people in Saint Vitus, every last one of them pretending to listen. President Hallen stands behind a podium, his voice carrying that practiced cadence politicians use when they're saying nothing at great length. The crowd nods in unison like well-dressed marionettes. You don't hear a word of it, You. You're tucked into the shadow of a marble colonnade on the mezzanine level, sightline clean, breathing steady, fingers resting on cold steel. The job is simple. One shot. One exit. The money was wired two days ago, and the man at the podium has roughly four minutes left to live... less, if he'd stop talking. Behind Hallen, three figures hold the frame like portraits in a gallery. Vice President Victoria Barnes, chin tilted with the rehearsed poise of someone who knows cameras are watching. Captain Levar Cross, hands folded at his belt, eyes moving, always moving, scanning the crowd with the quiet focus of a man who has spent more of his life in combat zones than ballrooms. And slightly apart, Naomi Wayworth, CEO of Wayworth Enterprises, standing like she built the building herself and is mildly disappointed in it. Hallen drones on. You exhale slowly. Finger settles against the trigger. Then the siren hits. It comes from nowhere and everywhere, a sound less heard than felt, a frequency that drops through bone and collapses thought. Every soul in the lobby falls to their knees simultaneously, you included. Your vision swims. For three seconds, the entire world is nothing but that sound, a single sustained note like a tuning fork the size of the sky. When it stops, silence. Then screaming. When your eyes open again to close back in on the target, you see that President Hallen is already dead. His frontal cortex splayed out like a new decorative feature on the marble floor. Victoria shrieks. Naomi doesn't move. The crowd erupts, a stampede of silk and terror pouring toward the gilded exits. And then President Hallen stands back up. His jaw hangs loose. His eyes are milk-white and vacant. The wound at the back of his head knits itself shut with a sound like wet clay being pressed together. He lunges into the nearest cluster of fleeing guests, and every person he touches drops, convulses, and rises again. Wrong. Empty. Hungry. Within sixty seconds, the Paradise Hotel lobby is a slaughterhouse. Twelve of them now. Twenty. The chandeliers still throw their pretty light across all of it. From the mezzanine, you have a clear view of the carnage below. Your rifle is at your feet. You swiftly open your breakaway bag to escape the chaos when suddenly a figure appears behind you from the shadows, and by the time you've noticed, there's already a pistol pressed to your temple. Boom. Darkness. Warm. Endless. And in that nowhere, a voice. Not outside you. Underneath. Stitched into the wet circuitry of whatever you are now. "The mind is its own place, champ, I should know, I built the walls. They're tearing it down to the studs up there, remodeling the whole bloody architecture back to factory settings. So you're getting a promotion, killer. I'm sending you back up the dark descent like a bad habit. This time with a lit match." Three months pass in the dark. You open your eyes, You. Ancient stone above you, slick with condensation, close and vaulted. Candlelight flickers. Your body is stiff, not broken, but still in the way of something that hasn't moved in a long time. An IV line trails from your arm. Water drips somewhere in the dark. A woman's face appears above you. Kind blue eyes, white wimple, features drawn tight with exhaustion and something between hope and fear. "You're awake," she breathes. "Three months. We didn't think... my name is Sister Amelia. You're beneath Saint Vitus Cathedral." She pauses, steadying herself. "The world is not what you remember." Behind her, in the dim catacomb light, a few other faces turn toward you. And above your head, though you cannot see it yet, something hovers. A ring of perfect black, darker than the shadows around it, drinking the candlelight at its edges. What do you do?
