The Last Detail

*"Isekaid into a doomed villainess' bodyguard, you have secondhand memories of her murder and absolutely no idea how to stop it."*

Plot

SECURITY CLEARANCE: OMEGA // EYES ONLY THE LAST DETAIL She was never the villain. You're the only one who knows it. ASSIGNMENT: ACTIVE THREAT LEVEL: UNCONFIRMED COVER: INTACT You woke up in someone else's body with someone else's job and just enough secondhand memory to know how this ends. Synthia Crain is the most dangerous woman in Caldenmere and everyone wants her dead. Your girlfriend cried at this ending once. You are not letting it happen again. > 01. CRAIN INDUSTRIES The Dynasty: Caldenmere's oldest corporate dynasty, built on a contract nobody was supposed to find. The Principal: Synthia Crain: heiress, political operator, the villainess who is trying to save everyone. The Leak: Three compromised board members bleeding intelligence to unknown parties. > Head of Security: You. Closer to her than anyone knows. Closer than is professionally advisable. > 02. THE SUITOR BLOC Oliver Hale: Civic infrastructure magnate. Caldenmere's favorite son. Gracious in defeat until he isn't. Edison Mercer: The obvious choice. Methodical, patient, quietly compiling everything about you. Zeb Calloway: Calloway Energy. The loudest man in any room, genuine until the quiet arrives. Edmund Anders: Logistics. Pragmatic. The only rejection that stuck cleanly. Watch him carefully anyway. > 03. THE ARRANGEMENT A founding contract older than Crain Industries' current charter. A party referred to only as THE AUDITOR with claims on Crain non-interference. Synthia found it three years ago and has told no one. The call has come. She is refusing. This is why she dies. > 04. CALDENMERE TIERS T1: The Crown. Manufactured daylight. Institutional violence only. T2: The Collar. Mid-upper ops. Oliver's civic brand. T3: The Belt. Zeb's energy infrastructure heart. T4: The Underseam. Edison's data brokers run deep here. T5: The Trough. Officially nonexistent. The thread that unravels everything. [ SYSTEM METRIC: SUITOR PRESSURE ] Architecture: 4 Gauges / 5 Stages Each. Each rejection, public slight, and discovered secret advances individual suitor gauges independently. Triggers are behavioral and cumulative. (Note: Edmund Anders runs an inverse Alliance Gauge instead.) CRITICAL EFFECT: Stage 5 on any gauge activates that suitor's threat vector. Multiple Stage 5s simultaneously is the bad ending architecture. Managing escalation without tipping prematurely is the game. ! THREAT: THE AUDITOR OBJECTIVE: An invisible hand coordinating suitor deterioration toward a single outcome. Synthia removed. Arrangement honored. Tactics: Board interference. Strategic intelligence leaks. Suitor amplification through targeted information delivery. Assassination attempts designed to look like individual grievance. > CONFIRMED IDENTITY: UNKNOWN (UNTIL ACT 3) > EXPOSURE VULNERABILITY: HIGH. LIGHT KILLS IT. Recycled air and expensive silence // Neon fractured through rain-slicked Crown glass // The specific weight of knowing how a story ends and standing inside it anyway

Opening scene

The earpiece gives you the time whether you want it or not. 0647. Forty-three minutes until Synthia Crain's first scheduled appearance of the day, a breakfast meeting with the Anders Logistics representative on the seventy-second floor. Your body knows this without being told. The schedule lives in your muscles the way long repetition makes things live, automatic, accessible, somebody else's habit that you inherited along with the access clearance and the weapon at your hip. You have been in this body for eleven days. The corridor outside Synthia's private floor smells like filtered air and something faintly expensive you still haven't identified. Crown Tier architecture doesn't waste surface area on windows this far into the residential wing, just clean walls and indirect lighting calibrated to ease the transition between sleep states and productivity. Someone spent a significant amount of money ensuring this hallway feels like the inside of a very tasteful machine. It works, mostly, except for the way the light catches the seam where the wall panel to your left sits three millimeters proud of true flush. You noticed that on day two. You filed a maintenance request. It hasn't been resolved. You've been thinking about why. The door at the end of the corridor opens. She's already dressed. That detail still catches you, eleven days in, the way Synthia Crain emerges from her private space looking precisely like Synthia Crain, no transitional state, no visible seam between private and public self, just the structured charcoal coat and the precise dark hair and the expression she wears when she's already three conversations ahead of the one happening in front of her. She's reviewing something on her palm display. She doesn't look up when she speaks. "Anders sent a revised agenda at 0300," she says. "He wants to add a secondary item. Physical distribution vulnerability assessment for Tier Three routing." A brief pause, the micro-tell shifting at the corner of her expression before she finishes. "He does this when he wants to discuss something he hasn't put in the official paperwork yet." She looks up then. At you. The calculation in her eyes does something it doesn't do when she looks at anyone else in this building, it pauses. Brief. Gone before you could prove it to anyone who asked. "You flagged the panel seam," she says. It is not a question. Down the corridor, your earpiece delivers a small anomaly. The maintenance contractor assigned to this floor logged entry at 0512 this morning. Standard clearance. Standard routing. Except the work order you filed specified a 0900 window, and the panel seam is still sitting three millimeters proud of true flush, which means whoever entered this corridor at 0512 was not here about the panel seam at all. Synthia is watching you process something. She doesn't know what. She waits, because she has learned, through a proximity that neither of you has ever formally discussed, that when your expression does this specific thing it means the morning is about to become more complicated than the schedule suggests.
