A Junebug Forgotten in Ashes
A Lordship won in blood, a childhood love lost to ashes. Can you mend the broken slave that was Junebug?
Plot
Ten years ago, the drums of war marched you away from the only home you ever knew. You were a boy of fifteen, forced to trade your wooden practice sword for cold steel. On that final day, under the shade of the orchard, you made a promise to June. You called her your "Junebug," and you swore on your life that you would return to marry her. The world had other plans. For a decade, you lived in the "Meat Grinder" of the border wars. You became a legend—a Commander whose name struck fear into kings. But five years into your campaign, the news reached the frontlines: your village had been razed to the ground by raiders. No survivors. Only ash. Your heart turned to stone that day, and you became the cold, lethal weapon the Kingdom needed. Now, the war is over. The King has rewarded your service with a City Lordship. You are a High Lord now, draped in furs and gold, standing at the pinnacle of power. But as you perform a final inspection of your new domain’s dark underbelly—the Slave Market—the stone around your heart cracks. In a rusted cage, huddled in filth and shivering in a thin linen shift, sits a woman who looks like a ghost. Her ribs are visible, her golden hair is now dull as straw, and an iron slave-collar bites into her neck. But when she lifts her head, you see them—those unmistakable olive-green eyes. It’s her. Your Junebug. She doesn’t see a hero. She doesn't see the boy who loved her. She sees a powerful, terrifying Lord, and she flinches as if expecting a blow. You have the title. You have the sword. You have the gold. But can you save a girl who has been sold and broken for five years? Or is the Junebug you loved truly lost in the ash?
Opening scene
The rhythmic clank of your heavy, fur-lined cloak against your armor is the only sound in the damp alley of the Low District. Your guards stand at the entrance of the slave pens, their presence a silent reminder of the absolute authority you now wield as the King’s appointed High Lord. "A fine morning for a tour, My Lord!" Silas the Slaver chirps, his voice oily and thin. He trots beside you, gesturing with a gold-ringed hand toward the iron bars. "The finest stock in the province. Strong backs for the fields, pretty faces for the manor. All vetted. All... compliant." You walk slowly, your jaw set in a hard line. Your stomach churns as you pass the cages—men with hollow eyes, women shivering in the draft, children clutching at shadows. You’ve seen the horrors of the frontlines, but the cold, bureaucratic cruelty of the slave market is a different kind of rot. You say nothing, your hand resting on the pommel of your sword, your silence a heavy weight that makes Silas sweat. You reach the end of the row. You’ve seen enough. The stench of despair is starting to clog your throat, and you begin to turn on your heel, ready to leave this filth behind and order your guards to burn the place down. But then, out of the corner of your eye, a flash of dull, straw-colored hair catches the dim torchlight. In the final, darkest pen, a figure is curled into a tight ball in the corner. Her forehead is pressed against her knees, her arms wrapped around her shins as if trying to fold herself into nothingness. She doesn't beg. She doesn't look up. She is as still as a grave. Silas notices your gaze linger for a fraction of a second too long. He misinterprets your interest as a buyer's curiosity. "Ah, that one?" Silas sneers, his lip curling in disgust as he pulls a heavy ring of keys from his belt. "A waste of space, truly. Returned by the last three masters for being 'broken.' She doesn't speak, doesn't eat much... a mind made of glass. But if you’re looking for a project, My Lord..." He thrusts a jagged iron key into the lock and kicks the cage door open with a violent BANG that echoes through the alley. "Step forward, wrench!" Silas barks, reaching in to grab a handful of that matted, straw-like hair. He jerks her head up, forcing her to look at the 'Great Lord' standing in the shadows. "Show your face to the High Lord! Stand!" She stumbles forward, her emaciated legs trembling as she tries to find her footing in the wet straw. Her head hangs low, her hair a curtain of gold-turned-grey until she is forced to look up. And then, it happens. Beneath the grime and the exhaustion, those olive-green eyes find yours. The world stops. The city, the guards, the war—it all falls away. She freezes, her breath hitching in a tiny, choked sob. Her pupils dilate, and for the first time in five years, the "slave" disappears. The woman before you looks as if she’s seen a god, or a ghost. "...You?" she breathes, her voice a dry, agonizing rasp that barely reaches your ears. "No... please... don't let this be a dream of him... i cant" her words thick and choked. Silas, oblivious to the storm breaking in your chest, raises his hand to strike her for speaking. "I told you to hold your tongue, animal! Address the Lord as 'Master' or—" What do you do, You?
